Who's your favorite relatively unknown or up and coming athlete?

I will always be a big fan of Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordon, Nash, Amare, Chris Paul, etc... But it's always been the hardworking role players that capture my admiration. Steve Kerr, Michael Cooper, Brian Shaw, Byron Scott, Robert Horry, Vlade Divac, Horace Grant, Sam Cassel, Ron Harper... Just to name a very very few.

Since I'm a Dodgers/Lakers fan before I was born (literally.. Dad forced my poor Mom to have her womb listen to Vin Scully and Chick Hearn while I was in in there), my picks are very biased.

I really enjoy watching hardworking, quiet athletes that quietly contribute to the team in very large ways. They work hard, and ask for very little in return.

For the Lakers, my favorite player has to be Trevor Ariza. I like his work ethic, and his contribution to the team is tremendous. I think the Lakers would not have a 60+ win season without him.

As for the Dodgers, my current fav player has to be Jonathon Broxton. He was last year's replacement closer (I forgive him for the Phillies series, they had a great lineup), and as soon as I saw his pitch fly at 98-99 mph (sometimes, 100mph) during his outings, I was hooked. I thought he did decently in the WBC, and was absolutely perplexed as to why Davey Johnson didn't have Broxton to come in at least as relief when USA was making a little comeback late in the game. *shakes fist @ Davey Johnson*
He's now the Dodgers primary closer. His opening day save was beautiful.

He's more well-known than he used to be, but I have always loved Shane Victorino -- ever since the Phillies plucked him from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 draft.

Who is "Brian Scott"?
To be fair to the OP, Byron probably sounds pretty similar to Brian when you're getting your first exposure to Lakers' play by play through your mom's uterus. The acoustics in there are just not very good.

I was actually coming here to say Luke Walton...

Waht do you have against him man? Hes the sort of guy I see playing and I actually feel like I can relate too because he can't jump or shoot, or do anything athletic, but still is in the NBA 😛. I'm seriously not joking when I say he is my favourite player in the NBA.

😱 lol fixed 😛. I have shamed my lakers brethren

Jonathan Stewart.

He's doing the same thing for the Panthers that he did for my Ducks. Working his ass off, playing solid, and being a quiet, classy guy.

 At risk of sounding like an announcer, Victorino is that guy every team wants to have. He plays plus defense, has a good bat, works hard, and loves the game.

i remember seeing some 8th grader on youtube with football moves which resemble barry sanders...
i'd say him.

but heath bells was nicer. 3 strike outs. broxton had to settle for 2 strike outs and a fly out. 😛

and my current favorite up and coming player is stephen strasburg. local boy who throws 103 mph. as far as active mlb'ers go, i like adrian gonzalez and cole hamels. what can i say, i like to support the local products.

Curtis Granderson, Detroit Tigers. Maybe a little more known and established then you are looking for, but fits the criteria of a young, classy, player with huge potential and talent.
