WHAT THE HELL is wrong with Michael Rasmussen? I've never seen anything like this. He's crashed twice and he's on his fourth TT bike. Time to just give him a road bike, because he seems too nervous to handle his TT bike.

They are meant for pure aerodynamics, so they have limited ventilation and would be prohibitively hot and uncomfortable for road stages, especially in the mountains.

Actually, until last year the TT "helmets" had no padding, and thus provided essentially no protection. They were basically just aerodynamic fairings, with no vents at all. The newer, styrofoam TT helmets look a lot less elegant, but will actually protect the rider in the event of a crash (lucky for Michael Rasmussen today!).
