Hey I actually admit that I HATE PCs because they are such high maintenance, fussy, frustrating b*stards. The best I can hope for in a PC is that it is fairly transparent to my uses, e.g. I put in a DVD and it just plays without me needing to get a web update file.
On the other hand I am a bit of a tech fetishist in that I desire an overclocked Duron and more of that cheap RAM that I see at that moment.

Anyone who is qualified to bear the title of "senior member" (or higher) on the Anandtech boards must be considered as being within the top 1% in technical knowledge and ability. ;)

Out in the regular world I'm a techie.

In here I'm not.

Know what I mean?

Hey "senior member" you only get awarded senior member on the number of your posts. I think most people on the board talk about hardware a lot more than trying to read about it. Like, have you tried discussing the P4 with them? They haven't even digested the most basic of articles about how it works, and they don't seem to want to know. And then there is the obsessive trolling about video card marks etc. , but if you ask them what VESA was then their eyes glaze over.

;) I ask more questions than I answer.

If you look around the forums, all the people with Elite status didn't get there for knowing nothing. There are many Golden, Platinum and Diamond members who have a large data cache in their brains as well.

I definately have to disagree with that.

If you change Senior to "Elite" them maybe, as Elite is only granted by mods on quality of posts. You get Senior by quantity, not quality. I'm about 50 posts away from Golden, and I don't consider myself top 1%. Perhaps I'm just a blabber mouth? You only have to get 200 posts to get Senior, it's easy to run your mouth that much.

Red Dawn: Calm down with the windogg pics, geeze, what's next you going to have a link to a windogg gallery in your sig :D hehehehe j/k

Must be Windogg then.
I was browsing through the directory with the link to the Windogg pics.
There's a good one of Russ in there.

I don't spend enough time reading posts *ducks* to know who the best would be. I think what's most important is that you can search these forums for similar problems to whatever you may be experiencing and probably find something that will help you. I personally count myself a damn good tech, but I find it frusterating trying to help people over the net with problems...so I try not to get into it, and when I do, it's usually over ICQ or Yahoo. I've had probably two good tech posts here during my time, but I've accomplished much more, technically, in .the real world, as I'm sure the rest of you have.

Computers have taken over my life so much that it isn't even very funny to myself. Some of my friends complain how I talk about computers too much and that it is annoying. But that's only online when I am on Anandtech. Being on Anandtech is not a bad thing imo, I think being on Anandtech just gets me into computer mode and I always ask people if they fixed their problems and stuff. Can i help it if my friends' computers are having problems and I ask a bunch of questions so that I may help?

The reference someone made to the P4 earlier was pretty good. People who just become Intel/AMD zealots just stick with their company and barely ever research the thing which they are trashing. I know I used to carry on endless arguements on something which I knew nothing about, but that was when I knew basically nothing about computers and all I knew was that I had an Intel and that was the best imo. But now I have become much less biased, and therefore I have been able to suck up a lot more diversified info and such.

One thing I think everyone can agree on is that there's no better resource for computer hardware insight, anywhere on the Net.

Gotta agree with Genius on this one. Tried explaining to someone what they were doing wrong and it was totally taken the wrong way. I try not to help unless I have the machine in front of me from now so I can demonstrate what i am talking about. People get far to defensive when they are told they did something the wrong way. That senior member thing means nothing. I have been around the forums long enough to have to reregister a few times and i am still only a senior member. Some of us simply don't post that much. If I have to pick one which I would never pick just one. I would definately start with Jonnyguru then probably Russ. Realworld experience is by far the best to have.

P.S. oops sorry Modus almost forgot about you. Put Modus up there with Russ and Jonnyguru except for his opinions about winmodems I count him extremely knowledgeable ;)

Agreed, you just can't get the same feel for how a piece works from one review as you can from lots of people who've used it.
And with more than 30k users on this particular board, you can almost gaurantee there are bunch of people running similar setups to you.

I consider jpprod, and Benskywalker the best in this forum (that I know of) for video card knowledge. There are LOTS of people here that know a great deal in different areas.

"If you look around the forums, all the people with Elite status didn't get there for knowing nothing."

not true, I started off here (a few years back) and I didn't have a CLUE about computers! I still get my ass kicked in intellectual conversations on a regular basis.

I personally don't think I deserve to be on the list. I know my one select area fairly well: semiconductor device electronics and, to a far lesser extent, microprocessor architecture and performance.

But in terms of general hardware questions, I tip my hat to a lot of the true gurus on here. The thing is that most everyone that's been mentioned has a specific area that they are very good at. It'd be hard to pull one name and say, "This person's the best." because everyone has their area of expertise. There certainly are a lot of general hardware experts on here, a lot of good advice, and a great place to turn when things go wrong.

I'm at work on a Sunday because I probably made a big mistake in one of my circuits (I spotted it on Friday), so not only do I not feel like a good techie, but I'm not feeling very clever at all. :(

That brings up an interesting point... Why is AnandTech so gamer centric? I don't how some of you have all this time to play games and spend four thousand dollars on dream gaming systems just to have them become obsolete in two months. And these LAN parties, go get some fresh air.

People like myself custom build computers, repair them, design networks, etc. and really don't care if a machine can do 100fps in Quake (just so that is can do 70fps for casual office gaming, hehe).

I like ZDNet and their reviews, however they don't publish enough articles helpful to the system builder. I praise AnandTech in that aspect. As a suggestion however, perhaps in your Web News section, more "business" oriented news could be displayed. I for one would like to see a grand review/roundup or 19" monitors under $500, with reccomendations for the business user, gamer, and value oriented consumer.
