Whos sitting waiting for socket AM2?

Well? Im not, i sat and waited for the hammer to upgrade from my pentium 4 willamette, ended up sitting on socket 754 with little upgrade path and no overclockability. Yay for me 🙂

IMO:

Pros of AM2:
-Supports DDR2
-Will be the newest socket, therefore longer upgrade path
-Supposed to support quad core?

Cons:
-Immature socket, unlike 939
-No real performance increase to begin with
-Need a new processor to use it? Dont know if a 939->AM2 adaptor would work, what with 939 using DDR1
-It still uses pins

U should add an option " Couldnt care less"
I have my dual core now, and i wll probably end up keeping it for 2 years or so, i see absolutely no point in upgrading that anytime soon, as it looks in the next year the only cpu faster than mine will be a fx62.

By the time i will need to upgrade socket AM2 will be replaced, probably by new socket with ddr3 anyways.

can't see no reason to wait. I doubt that 1st generation AM2 boards will bring anything really interesting new stuff, and to me it seems that CPU speeds advance pretty slowly, so having a 2.6Ghz dualcore now seem to be pretty future proof.

Ok, have two votes for "yes its the next big thing" but noone actually commenting. Share your thoughts early AM2 adopters 🙂 Why are you gonna buy it?

i'm waiting for them. hopefully it'll drive the price of 939 down so I can nab a dual core cpu w/in a year... i'm pushing 3.5yrs on my athlon xp2400. When I bought that, I vowed only to upgrade my cpu if I could double my raw cpu speed for $150. not a logical requirement... but i'll consider a dual core 2ghz to fit that, heh. Not that I need it or anything.

My guess those switching to AM2 are either s754 or older, or Intel users. (Or those who want the latest and greatest no matter what 😛)

My thoughts exactly. I'd be surprised if there's anything significantly faster than my 2.6GHz Opty 170 within the next year (especially at any sort of reasonable price), so I have no reason to even consider upgrading in the near future.

Skipped 754 and plan on skipping AM2. I fear AMD is losing its edge by waiting this long for DDr2. If DDR2 turns out to be faster/better than the second socket that uses it will be worthwhile and will get my money. Another good reason to wait a little longer is the first chipset for a socket historically has issues.

There really is no gain in performance from s939 to AM2......actually from some of the reviews ive seen the 939 athlons perform better. I might upgrade to s939 soon and not even wait for AM2 because:
1.) prices on dual core processors are lower than ever
2.) Opteron goodness
3.) Too close a performance gap between AM2 to justify
I might actually wait to see what intel has to offer this yr with their new line-up(I know it sounds bad).

I am going to wait for Intel to do something with Conroe before I make a decision. If I'm going to need a new mobo, CPU, and memory, then I want to get the most out of it. I like what Intel has done with the Core Duo in my laptop, so I'm hoping something good will come in desktop form. For now, my current X2 machine has plenty of power and should keep me happy till 07 (maybe with a new vid card before then 😀))

I went ahead and did an update now. I figure that by the end of the year I'll get a couple of (by then) affordable Gforce cards and take advantage of SLI and upgrade the CPU with the fastest available (and affordable) Athlon 64 X2. I think the 939 has a lot of life left in it. At least until this time next year.

One of my nerd herd was talking about the virtues of AM2 today, but I told that I was waiting to get a deal on an X2, while awaiting the outcome of Windows Vista. Too much change is not my cup of tea. Great luck for those who do get the AM2. I'll be satisfied with a dual core X2 and a 24" Dell.

same here..i really wish that AMD would have said screw am2 for now and stuck with 939 for a bit longer

I'm not... I bought an opteron 165 🙂...

Unless all of a sudden AM2 brings very significant performance increases in many areas, then I would be selling my parts 🙂.

Well THG says that it performs worse than the 939 equivalent, atleast with DDR2 667. Thats why they are waiting till June to release AM2 and run DDR2 800 standard.

Why do you guys insist on making a zillion threads on the same thing

Anyway, as i've said in several of the previous threads, i don't see myself switching to AM2 anytime soon.
I think the chances of me jumping to Conroe are higher.

yup, totally agree. i have a p4 2.8GHz with 800Mz FSB...i'm doing fine, it's just MX440 that's getting a bit old (actually it was old when i bought it in '03 😛). i'm not waiting for june to get the AM2. i wanna see how it fairs for 6-12 months, wait for the bug fixes, then buy it. i'm perfectly fine with my 2.8 intel for another year or so. plus, as a previous poster mentioned, intel might actually turn up something good this time. i guess i'll just wait and see

btw OP, i voted for "it's the next best thing" or something like that so here's one post from one of those voters for ya 😉
