Who's preordering X-COM?

Once again, seeing a news artical mentioning price ($50US), I hop onto steam, and being down under, I see $80US as the asking price.

The "going to get it somewhere else for a few dollars cheaper" quote just seems really bad. Getting it for upto 1/2 price is not a few dollars.

Though on a side note, the comments written for the Doom3 remake just has me cringing with the "anti console" marketing..

How much do Aussies pay at sites like GreenManGaming? The discounted US price?

Not really used that site, Though looking at it, the price is $50US.

Most similar sites I just get the s*** with as while the price is nicer, I get an error at some point during check out saying "not available for your area" or similar. Happens enough that I just do not bother looking at those types of stores anymore. Even sites similar to Direct2Drive.

I use to buy out of Asia, but most games with cd's and online DRM lock out the serial numbers when used outside the region, even though my country is just next door.

Currently having to order (box or cd keys) from the UK to get reasonable prices. g2play is the more common one over the last 2 years I have been using.

Looks neat, but I'm not paying 50 bucks for it. Will wait a year.

Im in the same boat Im going to wait this out see some reviews ect. But if steam has some unbeliveable sale (I was going to wait out the Jagged Alliance2 remake but picked it up ahead of time for 20 bucks on steam) So when it wasnt as good as the orginal JA2 I didnt feel ripped off

When they bring in a old microprose classic title Im a lil wary that they are just cashing in so as much as Im excited Ive been burned too many times

Well, it's a Firaxis title so it will probably be on Steam sale for $25-30 within 2 months. Or get it on now on GMG for preorder on the next coupon for either $37.50 or $33.75.

Just to make sure you're aware, that's from the console version of the game (probably obvious given the button images shown 😛), which does have some differences compared to the PC version (mostly in the UI). They showed off the PC UI for the first time during PAX.

That's the PC version played with an xbox controller. They explicitly state that. The PC version will support both a gamepad (woohoo!! 😀) and a keyboard&mouse.

Rut Roe (Scubbie voice) controller?? Why would someone voluntarily play with an Xbox controller over a mouse. This is what I meant about consolitis earlier.
Please someone enlighten me.

Have been waiting and watching this one for a long time as well. The 1 hour gameplay video just made the wait a little bit harder. Will wait to preorder though.

Well, that's what I get for just looking for the "phone booth" as they called it at PAX. 😛

I don't think that I would play this game with a controller though. Watching them move a cursor around with a joystick was... painful! D:

Yeah, I figure this probably started as a PC exclusive, but the publishers didn't like that. So they consolized it just enough to be able to sell it on the xBox and Playstation. I'm still on the fence with regard to pre-ordering, but that hour of gameplay video has given me something more than hype to go on.. I'll probably break down and pre-order the week before it comes out or something.

Looked OK to me 🙂 Limited maneuvering of each soldier anyway (map scrolling or turning and pointing where to go), switching targets, taking turns. The UI looked really good! I'd rather chill with a gamepad whenever possible 🙂

It looked like multiplayer versus mode has a move clock though, and I assume having more precise control might help with that.

Yea, in multi, especially if there's a timer, it's not really a contest - precision and faster actions above all (=mouse is king). But I don't play MP games anyway (competitive vs) - coop story mode at most 🙂 Gamepad works there great!

I too liked what I saw in that video. I may have to break down myself and get it. Although I may still wait till the reviews are all in.

I did...been waiting on a seemingly decent remake for many, many, years.

The verdict isn't in yet on how "Decent" a remake it is. Yet. Although I do have hopes that it was made as a PC title that was 'ported' to console and not the other way around.

And you may also want to check out xenonauts. it looks to be a truer spiritual successor to Xcom if it ever actually comes out.

I started up a new game of the original. Man, I wish the squads in the new one were larger. 8-10 with a tank just feels right. Allows for flanking. I'm guessing they balanced this by making the people strong enough to go off on their own without it being a suicide mission, but that'd be kind of bleh.

That said I'm glad there's an ironman mode in the new one. No reload is the only way to play in my opinion (not that I'd force others to).

I agree that 8-10 is much more ideal. I remember the original (particularly TFTD) where you had huge expansive boards that you had to thoroughly explore. A large squad could quarter and search, or you could spread out and explore. Either method had advantages and disadvantages.

and I think this is something that the new one is missing out on.

I always liked to have just ~4 super elite guys with maybe 4 backup guys I'd leave in the skyranger just in case. So the 6 man squad limit sounds fine to me. It was just tedious trying to micromanage 10-12 guys every turn throughout the whole game.

After watching that preview I decided to go ahead and pre-order. I don't know if these are the same guys that crapped Civ 5 but the preview looked GTG to me. I remember when I saw the Civ 5 preview the day before release (after it was already pre-ordered), I just thought "uh oh...that looks kind of crappy". I did not get that feeling watching the X-COM preview, so I am eager.

I rather dislike how the snap shot / auto shot / aimed shot aspect is gone, but obviously that couldn't really exist without time units. I suppose it's made up for with enough other different new abilities.

I'm also going to wait. I've been burned before on pre-orders. Plus I could see this being at least 25% off in the steam christmas sale. I've lived this long without a good x-com remake, I can wait a few more months.
