Who's preordering X-COM?

    I had a similar glitch on my first play through, although I was able to get half my squad through the door and then it acted like a closed door for movement (my soldiers could still shoot through it. I ended up having to have my volunteer use rift to commit suicide and restart the assault (on the last base if you fail you can try again)l. Was really annoying, but not the end of the world (although if you find my post about it 7 or 8 pages back in the thread it seemed like it to me at the time).

    So if you really want to see the numbers, start recording your data. Every time you take a shot, write down the % chance to hit and if you hit or not. Humans are extremely biased, and very fallible. If you haven't done so before, read up on the Monty Hall Problem. I think it's a great example how people's emotions and expectations cloud logical thinking. Your expectations based upon the given %chance to hit every time you take a shot greatly bias your evaluation of the randomness. Daverino makes a very good point, and you shouldn't dismiss it out of hand. Instead, accept the idea he could be right, and objectively evaluate the situation.

    90% is still a 1 in 10 chance to miss. Seeing as how you probably take this kind of shot every time you see it which would mean even in 1 mission you could take it 10 times. Missing it that 1 time while it may seem absurd, is right in line with the numbers. However, when your assault that has been with you the whole game dies, you as a result remember the failure way more than the other 9 successes when the game did what it was "supposed" to do.

    I'd suggest reading comprehension, but doubt it would help the situation.

    EDIT: Not meaning to come across harsh, but I already stated that what I am seeing is not isolated instances. And I already admitted that it "Might" be my perception. And that, despite all of it I am enjoying the game. So you aren't adding anything to the conversation except insult (i.e. it's YOU, not the computer). Just saying if you are trying to help, read and comprehend what has already been said and don't just foist your own biases.

    I think you missed my point entirely.

    The way the game is structured, you often get to experience being unlucky but rarely get to experience being lucky. The game tells you beforehand what the odds of success are before you make a decision and that's the biasing factor. Since you always choose to avoid decisions with low odds of success (for example, using a rocket, or suppression or, overwatch instead of taking a 10% shot) you rarely experience being lucky. So your personal experience is not going to be a correct representation of the normal distribution of events possible.

    You're absolutely right in thinking that you're being more unlucky than lucky. But the reason isn't because the game is cheating. The reason is that you experience more opportunities to be unlucky than to be lucky.

    I know I have been lucky many times in the game. Plenty of cases where I had a 35 or 40% chance to hit, and hit. While missing with a 90+% chance of hit is frustrating, it never felt unfair, just unlucky.

    And you definitely missed my point. As did Nanobreath. And ChronoReverse (boy was that an epic fail). Kevinsbane convinced me of the possibility that there wasn't any mechanical inequity in the game. I conceded that point a while ago. And still am enjoying the game. Anything beyond the point where I already understand what the issue is serves no purpose to discuss.

    It's like saying "And another thing." after you won the argument. Enough already and let's move on to something else. No need to try and convince me further.

    I keep thinking I'm playing original XCom. . . have an alien with only a couple of HP left so I run over next to them to shoot point-blank...then I think I'm playing the original so I click the gun icon to shoot...except all I've done is run over there and reload at them >_<

    Just picked up Xcom a couple of days ago, and loving it so far. I never really got into Fallout Tactics or Jagged Alliance, but for some reason I'm really enjoying this.

    Minus the game-breaking bug where everything seems to freeze up - can get in the menu once via ESC, then it no longer works; along with every other keybind...they just stop working, but the music plays and the game is running -requires me to kill task and start the game again.

    This bug almost always happens when one character has to reload. If I tab to another character without reloading first, the Reload text and 'OK' sticks and doesn't go away, no matter what character you are on...heads up, because I finally figured out how not to get 'stuck' by carefully watching gun ammo totals and not tabbing when a soldier needs a reload. Haven't seen anyone else mention this in forums, but it happens to me in both the demo and full game.

    I encountered another game breaking bug. I am in the Temple ship. I have encountered several doors that do not register as doors. So I can't proceed through the ship. Anyone else encounter this? Or have an idea how to fix?

    I've only played the originals myself but if I ever needed to make a "door" then rockets, grenades and high explosives always made for a quick remodel.

    Yeah, not the same in this game.

    What the Forum on 2k games said was that you had to restart the mission. Which I did. And finished the game. But still, chalk up yet another game breaking bug to the list.

    Finally beat the game on Normal.

    Initially I tried it on Normal hardcore. I would typically end up making some major blunders or unlucky squad wipes around the first big alien ship assault mission.

    Since trying it non-hardcore I really steamrolled, in fact it got maybe too easy. Once you learn from some subtle mistakes the recipe is fairly foolproof - keep your squad tight, but spaced slightly. Always use both moves, over watch. 90% of the time I made a mistake was rushing someone too far or trying to "Scout".

    Now I am doing a classic/hardcore run. So far so good, but so far to go.

    Love this game. insanely addictive.

    Yeah, once you get into the habit of "move, overwatch, move, overwatch" it gets pretty easy.

    I will say I prefer to spread out my guys on those council/extraction missions - when you get the main objective and a half dozen or so Thin Men drop out of the sky and go into overwatch mode. They're one-shottable, so having your squaddies already in position and in overwatch themselves means 3-4 of the 6 die immediately, and you're probably already in position to pop the remainder without moving (so their overwatch status is irrelevant.)

    I had 4 of my squad in overwatch and cover, most got KOed and one was killed by that robot tank alien(first time I've seen it at the supply ship) its heavy armoured and long range attacks hit hard,don't know how I'm going to get close enough to get most of my squad firing on it and hoping to take it out,even direct rocket hit from range did not do much damage to hit.

    I'm still pissed you can miss at 100% wtf?..game needs rebalancing IMHO and is hard for noobs,I class myself as a pro, been playing all the original XCOM games sinces 90s,and this XCOM game is the hardest of them all IMHO and this is on normal lol ...

    I'll split my team up and try and take it from two sides,hoping this will work.


    Finally did it but took hours of patience, lots of aliens lurking about,was bit annoyed when that robot thing blasted a hole in the ship and more aliens came lol oh well guess they got to make it harder for us and give us no breaks whatsoever.

    Sectopods are pretty much the only alien I regularly use smoke grenades on. Suppressing fire also helps immensely with them.

    The Mechs can be tough to take down. Definitely want to stay out of range as much as you can. What I usually end up doing is setting up my Sniper. Then hitting the Mech with a shredder missile. Then having someone move into sight range and 'Spot' for my Sniper. Let the Sniper take the 'Head Shot'. Then have the spotter fade back with his second move. It takes a few rounds to set up and knock them down, but it is just about doable.

    The two Mechs in the Temple ship are really tough to handle. They seem to hit harder and multiple times (three rocket strikes at once). And the fact that there are two of them makes it even harder. Best I found you could do was spread WAY out and take deep cover. Plan your attack and hit HARD

    The sectopods in the temple ship can generally be one-shotted or very heavily damaged using your volunteer's psi storm (the new ability you get).

    It never occurred to me that it would work on mechs.
