I've met two people; one I met on these boards about 2 years ago (we were both complaining about not being able to get DSL and it turned out we lived about 30 minutes from each other) and we are still really good friends, although he is going to college in about 2 weeks... I'm sure we will remain friends though.

The other I met off another board and he helped me install some parts for my car... both experiences were really good, albeit a bit awkward at first.

I've met Steve Gibson, proprietor of Shugashack.com

Sat next to him at a LAN event back in 96 and had my ass thoroughly handed to me on DM4. :D

It was great.
Male, we met through NoWonder.com.
Yes, we are still very good friends, as in married.
He is the only online person that I have met IRL.

Chatting in an AOL Philly chat room once. Started talking to this one girl for few weeks. She kept refusing to send me a picture of herself, said se didn?t believe in them. Stupid me went to go meet her anyway...... and then the fun began.

First off, se kept mentioning how she meets people off the net all the time, and how everyone finds her an enjoyable person (read: slut. Later found out that she met 30 guys off the net in 1 year, and ?just happened? to have slept with 30 guys that year. She told me this, I was in shock). She was also a self proclaimed wiccan priestess thing. All BS if you ask me.

Anyway.. it was about 10 pm and with an hour+ drive a head of me, I picked up a weight lifting karate trained friend of mine for protection and started on the road to Philly. Well, hour+ drive ended up being more like 2+. The PA turnpike was under construction the whole way down there.

She gave me a description of what she looked like: worked out, loved tight clothes, long hair, told by guys she had a good body. Truth: no way she worked out, long hair? Umm.. no. She wore tight clothes that she hung out of in al the wrong places.

So anyway..

We eventually got to her apartment and my buddy and I were quite scared. We saw her in the shadows.. and then it all went down hill.

She was a NUT JOB!! When we went to her room she had 2 cats.. both in EXTREME HEAT! They kept trying to back themselves up on us. And the girl.. well... almost the same thing. She kept touching me and I had to keep making up excuses on why I didn?t want her near me. My friend knew this was bad and started to act like a openly gay man. She hated that. Knew he was a liar. Eventually we (for some reason) all walked out onto her balcony. I came back in, she followed, friend was ?supposed? to follow her, BUT she slammed the door shut and locked him out there. The look of fear on his face was terrible! She said it was okay and that he could be find by himself out there. I would not have that. Got the door opened and let him back in.

She then suggested that her and I go take a walk and leave him in the room. He looked scared again and I said he can?t be left alone. She said he could take care of himself. He mumbled something, she went out on the balcony again, he followed. I am not sure what was said out there, but I do know she eventually told him that ?You can?t lie to a witch? At that point he lost it. THANK GOD for that.

They came back in, sat down, and then all of a sudden my friend got up, grabbed his head, yelled something about needing his pills, and fell to the floor, shaking. I grabbed him by the hand, said I was sorry, and we ran down the hall, down the steps, to our car, and sped all the way back to jersey with a picture of Jesus from his wallet on my dash to protect us.

Needless to say.. I WONT BE DOING THAT EVER AGAIN!

Worst part about it.. she still called me for a week wanting to hang out with out my ?crazy? friend

It's 100% true..
If it were a few months ago, I could have let you listen to the message of horror I left on a friends voice mail on our way out of the city.
But thankfully, that and all other physical evidence of this trip is gone. Only thing left to remind me are the images forever burned into my brain..

I met some people in an online gaming clan we have had for 3 years in Chicago. Just Canadians and Americans. And no, it didn't change anything. They were good guys and we were all about the same age

I've met one person from the net. We've been friends since his Sophmore year of high school and he is a senior in college now. We decided to meet up last year (finally) and we are still very good friends to this date and will continue to do so. We've know each other for 7+ years now. Other than that I am very leary about meeting people of the net. I have friends who went through horrorible experiences in doing so.

I've met a few people, back in the day when local BBS' used to have get togethers, bbq, etc... And then happens i was looking for a 311 album, and the guy sent it to me, but it was at an insane speed, and it turns out he was like 5 rooms down the hall from me on my dorm floor. Then another guy in an irc channel i hang out in, turned out to be 2 floors above me. I don't think i've really met any chicks though, or psychos. One time some girl that was the floor below me IM'd me and asked if i wanted to smoke weed, i had to decline though as i had no idea what was going to happen.

I met an anandtech person in real life. It was Mr. Malcahy - I hope I spelt his name right =) Anyways, it was for a deal that we were making. I was buying some weight training equipment off of him.

To get to the point, this guy was one of the nicest people I've ever met and has definitely given a good name to Anandtech forums members everywhere! Good person he was =)

LordJezo, I have a few comments for your story if you don't mind.

You bring a "weight lifting karate" friend and still you're scared of a skanky girl?
You should have just knocked her out and looted the place. I'm sure there were some things in the apartment worth taking!

Also, that reminds me of a total slut who uses AOL Instant Messenger. Her screen name is "GroupSexGirl" and she lives in Philly. The screen name says it all, but the profile is just the cherry on top. Says she is looking for men aged 25-35 who are "into the swinging life style." Granted my criticism of her was not held in high respect, she still seems to block any and all screen names. A girl of that stature should be a little more lenient when it comes to verbal AOL bashing!
