Who's Making The Best Netbooks?

I've been looking around reading about all the netbooks out there now, of course Asus Eee had my eyes the most until I read on Asus' site that extended warranties don't apply to the Eee.

http://support.asus.com/repair...no=201&SLanguage=en-us

Unless what I'm seeing here is not correct about the Eee and you can get an extended warranty I'm looking elsewhere.

Another interesting thing that caught my eye were these Acer extended warranties:

http://store.acer.com/product.asp?pf_id=11040536 (Mail in, what is this suppose to mean?)

Also I see you can buy Acer extended warranties through online sellers:

Any input here would be greatly appreciated?

THANKS

Just curious, why do you want an extended warranty so badly?

Nine times out of ten they go unused, and that is money completely wasted.

They also rarely if ever cover abuse (dropping the laptop), which is how most laptops break down.

If you need the extended warranty and possibly accident insurance, that leaves only Dell.

I'd look at the new Dell Mini 10. It should be released on the February 27th.

It looks to be the best thing that will be avail in the near future. It has an almost identical keyboard to the HP Mini 1000/2140 and has the option of 1366x768 screen.

Have a look at the configs for the Dell Mini 12 to get an idea of the warranty/insurace pricing.

I don't know about other companies but I love my HP warranty, and it's more than covered itself.

Replaced lid and CD drive after dropping it a week after i got it.

Replaced front audio jacks after a set of headphones sheared off inside it.

Replaced inside monitor cover from crack from being torqued.

Replaced speakers from the right one being blown after a 4hour jam session.

Some other little micellaneous parts like feet and stuff too.

Personally I had my eye on the Acer 10.1, but what does the mail in warranty mean? You have to mail the netbook back in for repairs?

I've seen many laptops fail in just over a year. I'd like to think I'll hang onto something like this for 2-3 years, that is why I want an extended warranty, also I think it gives it a better resale vaule too...

Didn't know Samsung had a netbook:

Samsung NC-10

THANKS

lenovo might be an idea but...do you really want to pay almost double the price of a netbook for an extended warranty? 3 year accidental repair on a $400 S10, for instance, brings the total to $600.

one year accident damage ie $39, 2 years is $149, 3 years is $200

doesnt seem worth it when dell has had deals lately to get new netbooks for under $300 a piece.

I know Dell backs their stuff. I had the 3 yr warranty and one day I spilled coffee on the sucker. I email Dell told them I spilled coffee. The next day a guy was at my door picking it up and a day or two later I received the fixed laptop. They replaced alot on it (video, mobo, cpu).

Netbooks are so cheap, there is no point buying an extended warranty.

 I could imagine if you spent over ~1k for a laptop an extended warranty would be well worth it, but on a 300-500 netbook? plz

Yup... Laptops of all kinds are disposable. I wouldn't buy a laptop that costs more than $700. If it broke after a year, the monthly cost would still be less than my internet bill.

My refurb'd m4400 came with a standard 3 year warranty, but I added an accidental dmg to it because I can be a clutz.

Buy a netbook, buy a warranty from squaretrade. /thread

squaretrade, hmm interesting never heard of them...

Well I think I want to get the Samsung NC10, not sure what extended warranties if any that Samsung has...

Anyone know much about this squaretrade?

OP: It depends on your definition of "best".

The Acer Aspire One has outsold the other netbooks because it is a better value to the tune of $100.

If you want the best build quality, something like the Lenovo model or the Samsung would probably be best. Really though, the Acer has a good build quality. I tried one out and it felt solid to me. IMO it's worth saving the $100 and getting the Acer.

Yeah still thinking about the Acer, but I want the 10 inch screen one, so not sure how much that is...

Also what is the Mail In Warranty with Acer? Those are cheap like $89-$99...

I've bought Squaretrade warranties over the last couple of years for anything "technical" I got my mom - digital camera, laptop, etc. They are reasonably priced, frequently have discounts, but I've never actually used them for service. They have a good reputation, though,

Ask your credit card company, most extend the warranty by a year.

Not necessarily those terms - it's usually double the warranty (if under 5 years) up to a year. Either way, I still think buying an extended warranty on a netbook is just retarded. They're so cheap, you're throwing money away on extended warranties.

I don't have a credit card, only debit, what about this Squaretrade?

Well I personally don't like the idea of spending around $400 and then have something die in 13 months, because it can happen, then have to dish out another $400...

The idea behind not buying extended warranties for these cheap items is it is self-insurance. In most cases, if something is going to break, it will break within the warranty period. But it's your money, spend as you see fit.

Never used SquareTrade, so can't comment on that front.

I've replaced a camera through them, after I did a claim, they sent me payment in 7 days (since the model was discontinued) for the original price after 2 years.

I just ran a quote on SquareTrade's web site.

For a new $400 notebook, 3 yrs coverage is $60. Accident coverage is an additional $40, and has a $50 deductible.

I just added "BYEBESTBUY" in the "coupon code" box at checkout, and that knocked $50 off the price!
