I had a root canal. Two months later its acting up, so its been cleaned out (again) and is now an "empty tooth" and its sore as hell. It was cleaned out yesterday, ive got a trip abroad coming up and i dont wanna go with a sore tooth i would rather have it taken out so i can get an implant for when i come back. I can then sit and recover by playing c&c 3 which will be out by then.

So how longs it supposed to hurt for? Its really frickin sore i need painkillers! Im gonna phone the dentist tomorrow if its still sore but in the meantime ill ask you people :p

If the dentist does it right you won't feel a thing during the root canal and you should be able to get by on Tylenol and Ibuprofen.

My mouth is really sensitive, so it took lots and lots of novicaine, and still pinched some. But after it was done it rarely hurt. Its been two years now and its just slightly temperature sensitive (with real hot/cold beverages).

yeah, everybody is different. Even with Wisdom teeth - some people recover over night, others are down for the count for 2 weeks.

Sorry, but it looks like your dentist is an idiot. Root canal should not hurt at all after treatment. First doctors kill nerve in a tooth then they clean up all crap from it and seal it. So you should not feel this tooth at all. Problems start when the dentist leave some crap behind then infection spreads to your jaw and you feel pain. This is my understanding of the subject, read online about it, there are some problems with the whole idea of root canals for example. I had pretty difficult root canal on 2 back teeth i had some problems after this for about 1-2 month but did not need any medications. I think the dentist did ok considering difficulty of the job in my case (she applied so much force to a file that my chair was moving).

The tooth isnt sore its whatevers beneath it, it got drilled last time with no anesthetic and it was fine because i had the nerves removed 2 months ago. Im fed up with this though... my dentists tried to save it... its unfortunately not worked out, im gonna have it extracted ASAP, today hopefully. When i get back from my holiday i can have an implant put in.

how long is the root canal procedure normally? i'm being a big baby and putting off an appt that will probably result in the dentist saying i need a root canal

Depends on the tooth, my back molar with 3 canals took about an hour and a half total, two appointments. Dosent hurt, especially with injection, afterwards it was a different story, not agonozing like it is now but it was hella annoying. Painkillers for a few days sorted it.

I got my foot run over by a car onetime. I would say this entire dental experience was worse than that. Although 95% of root canals are fine i guess im one of the unlucky 5% this time.

It shouldnt be sore at all, However a root canal treatment is just a : it may work procedure, the teeth where I had that done had to be taken out later anyway..

how is that possible - your tooth is dead - that's what a root canal treatment does - teake out the root thus killing the tooth

Could easily be the tooth next to it, or remnants of a nerve, the nerves in the jaw and tooth make it very difficult to tell specifically where sensitivity or pain is coming from. So much so that i went back to the dentist convinced that i had root treatment on the wrong tooth, how wrong i was.

Shouldn't hurt past 48 hours. But there are no guarantees regarding the body since everyone responds differently, and it's hard to make a call based on such limited information. What tooth was the RC done? What was progression of the infection prior? Anyways hope you feel better. I have to go and perform a root canal now : )

The bottom row back molar on my right side. Its stopped throbbing today, i think it might be slowly getting better. The root canal was done like 2 months ago, but it got sore again recently after kinda healing, it was always sore to crunch stuff on, but chewing was okayish with it. So i go back and the x-ray shows a perect root canal, no visible problems, but since it was sore she took the entire thing out and cleaned it, then put in some anti biotic stuff for a week with a temporary filling that tasted bad. Now the week is up and its been taken out and cleaned again, and filled with more anti-biotic and this time it has a different type of temporary filling on top and its a lot sorer than last time. My jaw isnt swollen or anything though, and its only pressure thats sore but i think it may be getting better, just slowly.

I had a pretty nerve damage to one of my front teeth and the root canal didn't really hurt at all after. Maybe because I was in so much main before that anything felt better after.

I've had 5 root canals!!! If they are done properly, they should be fine the next day and you shouldn't have any more problems out of the tooth. The trick is to find a dentist who can do one right.

i had a root canal go bad. a year after i had it done i experienced some pain so i went to the dentist and within the next 24 hours i had the tooth pulled and had a temp bridge put in. the original dentist who did the root canal screwed up and left part of the root in the tooth with a burr from the drill and it ended up getting infected which they didnt find out until they pulled the tooth and noticed the problem.
