That's what HD3870 was.

The 3870 is a mid-range card that gets beat by a $149 9600GT.

And you point? 3870 is a rehash of 2900xt. They are all R600 family of vid cards. R700 is scheduled for 2nd quarter of this year features 16ROP 32TMU 480SP with GDDR5.

In raw performance 3870 beats 9600gt maybe not with AA. Longevity is with 3870 not 9600gt with 64 SP.

Price cuts are coming for R670. 3870 for $159 and 3850 $145 respectively.

No flagship launch since then either. :D

Open your eyes ... your link is incredible and is way out of date
Post a recent one then.

i am not complaining; i will have equivalent performance in my rig for way less money

If by "equivalent" you mean slower and unable to even play some games. OK there ya go.

Unable to play some games? Like what? :disgust:

Anyone out there with a dual PCI-e Nvidia SLI board that can handle 445 to 500mhz FSB on an E8400/E3110? If so, it would be quite tempting to find an older nvidia sli board that can oc a wolfdale to 4ghz while yeilding dual 9600GT 512's. I see this as the ULTIMATE "budget gaming rig" right now if anyone's buying.

1 e8400/e3110 for $219
2 9600GT sli (on a massive overclock) for $260 or less
1 Nvidia 650/680/ etc SLI motherboard. (cheapest that has sli & 445mhz FSB capability) for ~$60

Ever so deeply into the dark side with intel cpus & sli gfx, but hey who gives a crap?
~$540.00 (about the price of a Q9550, or 1/2 of a QX9650)
:) Makes me smile just thinking about it.

I have an nvidia SLI motherboard with an e8400 and let me tell you that those north bridges would not really be cut out for that kind of FSB...but it won't really show in a lot of real-world results anyway. I would not feel safe with an FSB greater than 400 without at least a 40mm fan on my NB. Of course there could be exceptions if you have a sample that can undervolt significantly or whatever...

If you're going to put together a "budget" system then you are probably NOT going to splurge on the RAM, and if you settle on FSB 400 you can get some really nice RAM with tight timings for cheap, and you won't have to worry about an unstable northbridge.

The only game I can think of where the difference between 400 to 450 FSB would actually translate into a real world benefit is Supreme Commander, but that game is just ridiculous. Supreme commander is about the only game on the market that can really benefit from multicore and parallelization but the code is awful.

Not really a fair statement since you have to factor in the money you spent on 2900xt. How much are you spending in all? The cost of your 2900xt, 2900pro, and 3870x2, minus what you get for selling your 2900pro. Even if throw the 2900pro completely out, the price gap between adding a 3870x2 versus selling your 2900xt and getting a 9800gx2 is probably only $100.

Both 3870x2 and 9800gx2 will continue to fall in price, but I expect a delta of $150 to hold

Where are you getting these dates? Just an educated guess?
