Until Oblivion comes out, there's no reason for me to upgrade. That means March at the earliest, which gives plenty of time for the next generation to reach decent supply.

What new GPUs?
Updates, but not next gen, right?
Anyway, when next gen comes out, I'll buy it. But I figure it's not due till June.

Are the requirements for Oblivion going to be that steep?

I am cheap, so I am going to wait for the new generation to be released and pick up a 7800GT for between $150 and $100.

I think this is the best idea I've seen on here. The only thing you're paying for in a $500 video card is to be able to play the newest games NOW. A single player game, like COD2 or Doom3, will be the same exact game 2 years from now, the hardware will be a lot less money, the game will cost less too, and you'll get the same experience.
Now, I'm the last person thats going to tell someone else how to spend their money, but there are plenty of DX7 games that I wanted to play but didn't have the time or a video card that could play them, like Splinter Cell, MOHAA, MOHPA, etc. I still want to play them, so I use my 6600GT that I got for $100. Then, in say 2 years, I'll get a something else out of the bargin bin for $100 and play COD2, and get the same exact game experience that everyone else is spending $500 for now. I mean, its cool to have it now when its the new stuff thats out there, but I just can't justify spending the cash on it.
Now, to have a good video card to play new games online while they're "in" I can understand. I suppose I'm thinking the opposite of everyone else on this board, but each people have their own priorities.

Screenshots imply you're not going to run that bad boy on integrated graphics, no. And screenshots for Morrowind looked much worse than the real game.
Minimal hardware to run oblivion will be an xbox360. So, think X1800 or 7800GTX equivalent. It's fortunate for us mere mortals the release was delayed. I'm hoping next gen midrange cards have a hope of running this game, even if it's at 10x7 at low settings.
I'm also hoping the game doesn't suck. So many other games I've been waiting for this season turned out to be turkeys. At least bethsoft didn't decide to shove an unfinished, buggy turd out the door 'just in time' for xmas.

Ok, why bother with this generation, with the new generation seemingly right around the corner? Another GPU slugfest looming and price drops on out-dated 7800/X1800 silicon is also bound to happen which would tell me to at least wait for that before buying either of those.
But where would you put your foot down, because after the G71 and R580 6 months down the road is the G80 and R600...
I would wait until the G80 and R600, my 7800GTX can last till then and beyond, and i should still be able to get some money back from it around that time to support the F80 or R600 buy.
My logic is to go after the New Gen cards rather than the refresh cards, so i at least get 1 years out of my new gen card.

I really hope the next generation makes faster passively cooled cards possible.
That seems likely: higher MHz on similar die size = lower heat!
Ooops, wait a minute, that's not likely at all!
Nonetheless, you are my friend and I want to help you:
Passive cooling for next gen example
Use that photo as you guide, but use one of those giant Fosters Lager cans instead of a 12oz Miller. The added surface area of the can and hearty, robust flavor of the Fosters should eliminate the needs for the fan.
