*puts on promoter hat - keep in mind, I'm not being paid for this... I just babysit for the daughter of the bgirl who throws this jam every year... I think this is its 9th year*

Asia's website (no pictures of her baby here, but pictures of the girls in the crew)

Here's a picture of her baby, who I sit for (couldn't help but post a picture, she's so cute!)

Okay, here's all the info for Summit:

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up... BBOY SUMMIT 2003 is right around the corner! One of the biggest bboy/bgirl/breaker/breakdance events in the world. Crews have flown out from France, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Japan, etc. for this competition, scheduled to begin THURSDAY. Breaking/bboying, popping, locking, emcee battles, graf exhibitions, turntablism, live performances by true underground hiphop artists, and more.

Here's the agenda, starting JUNE 26, 2003 with a theater show (first of its kind, ever... think classical music meets breakdancing) at USC:

This Squad displays hi-energy breaking, lockin, and poppin shows, specializing in fly-girl choreography with some serious uprocks, downrocks, footwork and hard core freezes. These girls have the vibe to get noticed and the skills to get respect with NO EASY PROPS.

Mmm'kay. Uprocks, downrocks and hard core freezes (as opposed to lame-o freezes, i guess?) 😕

Boy, am I SO not the Y Generation....😕

It used to be that women just had to show up and they'd get noticed...now I have to go find one that knows how to pop a freezy poof..or whatever it's called?

Damn. Shoulda gotten married 15 years ago...I'm doomed!

😉

Meh. bump for you.

Aww...i would go..

and i could get a lot of people i know to go too.

but we're all the way on the other side of the country...

sucks... 🙁

bah. stupid west coast people...I'd love to go to this thing, but all I can do it dl clips every year. Dezign, how about you find someone that tapes this thing and put up and FTP for me. 😀 My friend would love to go too, he's a pretty big bboy around here, but comparably, he'd get his ass kicked. 🙂

Dude...you gotta pay $ to see this? 😵

Point being?

Meaning...I didn't know it had such a draw that they could charge for it at those prices.

This is one of the pricier bboy events, but also one of the biggest... it takes a LOT of money to throw a jam. You have to rent the space, buy insurance, pay the judges, pay the winners, promote, etc.

On a personal note, this event is the only income Asia has. What she makes from BBoy Summit is what she and her baby Yas live on for the rest of the year... she puts her heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into this event, and she's the main coordinator. I think those prices are reasonable... especially for the theater show. That one costs a lot in terms of rental fees, lighting fees, worker fees, etc... and it's going to be a very high-quality show. I figure you'd pay $50-300+ for tickets to a ballet, opera, show, etc... this theater show is no different, to be a showcase of performance artists.

You should come, Ed. 🙂

Not at all interested but I thought $65 for 4 days of events sounds like a blue light special to me, no matter what it is.

Heh... Jenni's coming. 😉

"i'm free friday and sunday. so i'd be down to go to the bboy thing that day and the BBQ. what times are those things anyways? i can also drop off your thing then too. so you have nerdy friends, that's so cool. see ya this weekend!

So can you do any of this break dancing stuff?

Heh. I've been trying for awhile... I've been taking some lessons from these guys.

But I suck miserably. 🙁 I can do some wack tops, zero ups, and some slow footwork... six-step and four-step into a baby or chair freeze I have down, but I don't have much "flava." Practice makes perfect, I guess... it's just so damn hard. When I started dancing, my respect for those who are actually good at it went up exponentially... it takes a lot of athletic ability as well as a good sense of rhythm and control... I'm not giving up, though. 🙂 Just don't have as much time to practice as I'd like...
