Who's car has the most miles?

My dads old 1975 Oldsmobile Custom Crusier station wagon had around 350K miles before he got rid of it in 1996. It got 12 miles to the gallon, was 3 tonnes (6000 pounds) and had a 454 V8 😀

Cheers,
Aquaman

i'mnot sure, my '85 crown vic's odometer doesn't have a 100,000 number. It turned over a few days ago, i only noticed because i got in the car and the odometer read 123 miles, which i found fairly funny.

I once talked to a trucker and asked him how many miles his 20 year old rig had. He just gave me a weird look and said, "You know, I really don't know but I reckon she's got well over a million and a half."

WOW!!!

Roughly 197,000 on my 1988 Accord LX-i, still pulls right to redline with no problems. I have no intent of getting rid of the car unless it literally explodes into several billion pieces. I'm sure the old girl can make it to 300K without major problems, and I'm gunning for a million miles. I personally put about 14,000 miles on it every year, before it was passed down to me my parents put around 17,500 mile on it per year. Viper, once more I say that you should resurrect that Accord of yours, she's still got a lot of life in her. (Also, your mechanic deserves to pay dearly for contributing to the destruction of a Honda.)

EDIT: Windogg, Semis routeinly get over a million miles on their engines. It's not that surprising when you consider that they redline at about 2,000 RPM, have air and oil filters that are larger than a man's torso, and have their own cadre of professional mechanics.

Exactly what I'm saying Zenmervolt!
The less an engine revs, the longer it'll last.
That's why mine IS going to 300k at least
4th gear highway cruising, the only time it pops out of OD is when I really mash it.
Otherwise, 4th gear OD, revs under 1800rpm....still in the torque band (peak of 250 @ 240rpm 🙂)

Viperoni, yes, all other things being equal, the less an engine revs, the longer it will live. However, an engine designed for operation at 2,000 RPM will not last as long at 3,000 RPM as an engine designed for operation at 3,000 RPM. Of course, the engine designed for 3,000 RPM will last longer at 2,000 RPM than it would at 3,000 RPM. Basically, engineering can overcome some of the effects of higher RPM operation, but not all of them. What I'm trying to say is that my Honda, which runs at around 2,750 RPM at 65, will not necessarily last less time than your Pontiac, although the extra RPM my Honda turns does not help.

Definetely Zenmer.
100% agree with you.
Honda's do have EXCELLENT engineering, but, I mean, having to rev high all the time *can't* be good for the engine.
I mean, not in racing situations, in real world driving situations.

That's my only gripe with Honda and the like.
You have to rev too high to get into the power band.
And to pass you really have to shift down....
120lb/f torque is really not much to work with, especially with a 2900lb car and the peak being at hgih revs.
However, 250lb/f @ 2400rpm is more than enough for anything.

Not only that, but having big torque down low makes driving more enjoyable.
When I drive my boat car (I admit it, it's a boat), I pull from 90 straight to 140kmh in a very respectable amount of time.
Below 105 it's slow to pickup, but once it reaches 110, it just flies.
I literally pull away from anything out there (again not racing, just regular driving/passing situations)

I'd honestly be scraed to race a V6 Honda 😱

I maybe old fashioned, but I believe that the less shifting, the less rpm's, the less wear (as a general statement).

Driving consistantly at a high RPM is bad but revving the engine every so often is a good thing. I've been told by mechanics that cars that have been "babied" all their lives might blow a piston ring when suddenly subjected to high RPMs.

Windogg, that used to be true back in the old days with crappier metals wearing faster in the low rev part of the cylinder wall, but even in these days it's a good thing to do that.
Besides everybody revvs up their engine occasionally, and it's a good thing to rev and engine after flooding the carb (to clean out the plugs/catalytic convertor)

I have probably some of the fewest miles for the age of my car.
'89 Nissan 240SX - 77700 miles on it. I'm completely serious too.

Dad has a 98 Honda CRV EX. 8000 (Eight Thousand) miles. He uses it to commute to work which is about a 10 mile round trip and some local driving.

I remember there was a thread like this a looong time ago. And someone's '80-something blazer had 600k before it was put down for goo. If this person were still on there forums, your benz would have some tough comp 😉

Wait - Windogg....you drive an X5, your brother drives and M5 and your dad drives a '98 CRV??? Is there something I'm missing? 😕

Just a side note for those of you talking about diesel rig engines.

Yes they are very low RPM, and get their engines rebuilt about 500,000 miles or so (top end). It's impressive to see pistons bigger than your fist.

genocide, you got it. Dad lives in the heart of Manhattan where parking costs an arm and a leg. He pays "only" $500 a month to park the CRV. His Land Cruiser used to cost $675 and was a real pig on gas. He now gasses up once a month now. Plus it's small size is great for maneuvering around the city. Back in his "young punk" days he used to have monsters including a Corvette Stingray, a Ford Galaxie, a Pontiac Tempest, etc.

Ah, ok. Makes sense when you put it that way. Judging from what you and your bro drive, I figured he'd be in a Z8 or something 😎

<< I've been told by mechanics that cars that have been "babied" all their lives might blow a piston ring when suddenly subjected to high RPMs. >>

hehe, by that logic, my car will never blow a piston ring. Not a day goes by where my car doesn't hit 6k rpm. Interesting knowing that my engine can spin faster than my 5400 rpm wd hd. '89 Accord, 145k miles.

<< Not a day goes by where my car doesn't hit 6k rpm. >>

Well at one point you will pass the point where high RPMs will cause more wear than the benefit gained from potentially not nuking anything when suddenly subjected to a high load. Viperoni has pointed out to me that it is less of an issue. I also have to be careful. I bring my engine to redline at least once a day when merging on one the Northeast's famous "Congested City 50 foot combination on/off ramp" or passing some idiot.
