Whoops! USB Cable into Firewire Port...

After months of waiting, I finally scored a P8P67 Pro for my 2600K at Microcenter last weekend. Due to my haste and lack of experience with onboard firewire, I accidentally plugged a USB cable into a Firewire port. I know I fried one of the two USB devices (flash drive) I plugged had plugged in before I realized my error. How would I know if I've damaged the motherboard?

Eh? How the heck did that even fit ?

I guess you can check by plugging in another USB device, and see if it works.

He obviously plugged the case's front-mounted ports into the wrong header.

OP: Correct the wiring and then try a Firewire device? MiniDV cam, external HDD, other Firewire PC, older iPod, really old PS2 model (like the 90001 series w/Sony iLink), etc.

Already corrected the wiring. Front USB and Firwire ports seem to work fine. I have had my USB keyboard and mouse stop working a couple times while plugged into the back USB ports though.

I think you're good to go then. My Logitech G-series equipment acts iffy like that* but I have an every-day mouse and keyboard plugged in as well.

*Probably due to complexity: high performance w/integrated hubs, displays, chargers, etc

I've run some more tests, swapping another flash drive between the front and back USB ports. Data transfer speeds have been consistent. However, I did have a data transfer freeze during a test which also knocked out my keyboard and mouse. And every time those go out, I can't simply plug them into another USB port. I have to do a hard reset in order for them to function again.

Firewire and USB are keyed the same. Crazy designer, obviously.

There was a different layout used simultaneously in the early days of front USB. Some cases have each pin loose so that it can be connected to both standards.
