Verizon sucks.

The cable company sucks.

Forget dsl, not supported by the phone lines. Forget a cable modem, not supported by the cable company. Forget even a stinking 56k connection, once again, not supported by the phone lines.

Called Verizon, they told me they have no plans on upgrading the lines because there is no demand for the internet.

Called the cable company, said they have no idea when they will bring cable modems to my area, it was not their problem.

Blah.

Organize as many people in your area as you can. Set up a website about what you and your organized friends will do. What are you going to do you ask? Your group will set up a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider). It is easier than you think and if you get enough people involved affordable too.

Fastest way is to bring a T-1 to a central location that would hit as many houses in your group as possible, then simply set up an off the shelf wireless system.

We did this here with 20 out of 90 homes in a subdivision committed. We bought the equipment (Oricino) and were about to turn up the T-1 when the phone Company called me and said they would turn DSL for us in 3 months. 3 Months to the day it was turned on.

It's all about the money. (Duh) Once you guys turn up your own service you never need the Phone Company again and they will never see your $50-$80 per month revenue from your friends.

Touche. Tested mine last night, 53 down, 60+ up. If I had a better signal in my house I'm sure it would be faster🙂

EDIT: BTW, I whole-heartedly agree, Verizon sucks big Donkey Balls!

Planet New Jersey.. home of corn fields, llama farms, and general stores.

Hell, the head of the KKK lives two towns away from me in the aptly named White Township.

We only had 24K dial up access here. That is all any of us could get out of 56K Modems. We were told by the Phone Company they had No plans on ever upgrading this area in our lifetime but yet just down the road they were putting in fiber Internet access for a subdivision owned by one of the richest people on Earth.

I've been dial'n up for just under 8 years now. Suck it up.

I am trying to.. but with everything from tv to video game machines now being geared towards broadband, its kind of annoying that I have to miss out on everything..

Um, no, they'll see $700-1100/mo from the person w/ the T1 serving 20 people.
Vs, each person getting a solid 768-1.5Kbps downstream, now they share a 1.5Mbit connection.

The $35-40/mo the Telco's and ISP's make from DSL doesn't seem to be a factor. OTherwise, why are so many DSL companies going bankrupt/out of business?

Well, just a thought.

There's also DirecWay, but, that's crap. And not always an option if you rent.

DirecWay forums and stuff Read up on the Fair access policy before ordering.

Dang.. sry to hear that ... .but it rili surprises me though. Cu'z in here I live (a small town in Canada).... I live like out of town.. and I still ADSL connection....

Sounds like me, I live a whopping ~12 miles south of Boston, and no cable (Adelphia bites, not even available, must be busy paying lawyer fees), no dsl (just a bit too far away from the CO, plus I don't think they list my town as supported anyway). Oh the choices - a crappy slow computer at work with fast T1, or fast computer at home with 56k (actually more like 36-40k) connection. Someday....

Its a problem in New Jersey... I live in Northern Jersey where Im also broadband challenged... 😉 I think its pretty fvcked up since in my township the average income is like $150k in 2002. I think there are a couple people making a ton cuz in 98-99 it was between $80-90k. I would think that since the majority of the township has money you would think the cable companies and phone companies would be all over it apparently not. The average property value per house is prolly $500k+, so moving closer or whatever is kinda out of the question.

Now my township is pbut its out of their hands for the following reasons:
1.) Theres only one Verizon CO in my township and only 1/3 of it is close enough to get Verizon Dsl
2.) RCN apparently is doing a half-@ss job with its service that the New Jersey Public Utilies Board has issued orders and subpeonas for them to shape up before they get sold.
3.) RCN only has 1 way cable service for most of northern Jersey and is in the process of upgrading but they are taking their time since there isnt competition for the service.
4.) Cablevision's OptimumOnline was supposed to be set up by this past May but due to their own financial problems its apparently put on hold. Hopefully they will get it done by this summer 🙁. It was originally supposed to be up sometime in 2001.

Man in my township we are just SoL

Where we live we've had broadband since I think 97 when Time Warner put Roadrunner in. If they hadn't we'd still be on a dialup.
My in-laws live in the boonies and will most likely never have high speed internet.

I'm from Jersey. Yeah i've had DSL for a year and even then I considered it to be very late. And in a couple of weeks I'm gonna be able to get cable. NJ sucks if u don't live in very populated areas. Good luck!
