Every other setting remained stock including the memory timings and voltages on the core and the memory chips. The card still thinks it's a GT with the same BIOS revision and part number and it is in every way except the core and memory speed MHz.

And I know how to use coolbits, I've been using it since the GF3 day. I know that it can apply the settings at startup, that's what I did until I flashed the card yesterday. This mod was all about NOT having to use coolbits or rivatuner or nvhardpage or atitool etc... to overclock. Call me lazy. :p

my bad

enjoy!

(talking of GF3......i just got hold of a passive GF3 Ti200....shame theres no video out...would be good in the living room in a HT PC_)

I'm just happy to have Ultra performance when I only paid for a GT. I have no doubt that an Ultra with it's faster memory chips willl OC higher than my card. :)

OP, did that particular bios editor allow you to change voltage to the gpu to 1.4v from 1.3v? I want to do that to my 6800GT, if it dies in a year, oh well, that's a good excuse for a 7800GTX :)

woohoo! Add me to the list, I'm now running a 6800GT @ Ultra

I'm one of those hardware guys who is like a year and a half behind everybody else. Socket 754 3200+ @ 2.5ghz, giggerram, 6800GT @ Ultra representin' :)

I'm constantly one generation behind the latest and greatest, that's the only way I can afford to upgrade. As long as I can play the games I want to play (with good IQ and stuff) I don't care if I have the very latest gear.

Flashed BIOS with what point & purpose?

Did you do a volt mod? If not, seriously, why did you flash the bios?
No need to volt mod the card. It was rock solid at Ultra speed at the lower voltage of the GT. And as secretanchitman said, now I don't have to muck with coolbits or any other utility to get the extra speeds any more.

Something I found out today: a GT at Ultra speed is faster than an Ultra due to tighter timings. I was pretty pleased to learn that I saved money and got a faster card overall.

Muck with coolbits? I just set it and leave it alone...running 420/1100 on my 6800GT

Seriously...I don't see the point of all that when I just tell it what speed I want and set it and leave it.

I agree.
Just set it in coolbits and leave it.

As these cards age, there are going to be a lot more GTs than Ultras, so if you want to go SLI you'll prob have to either flash the 2nd GT (which there is no guarantee it will work at those speeds), or get a real Ultra (which will be harder to do than finding a GT).

If it is my favorite brand (BFG) and it dies while flashed to an Ultra.. good lucking getting your free replacement as well.

Well, like I said yesterday, I am not afraid to take risks with my equipment. If I mess it up I can afford to buy new parts. If you can't, then don't. Oh and don't be using coolbits to overclock your card with either if you truly want to preserve the sanctity of your warranty (most brands don't allow overclocking past their clock settings). As far as they're concerned one form of overclocking is just as bad as the other. :)

And who would try to go SLI with these cards right now anyways? I might in the near future if I can get another EVGA 6800GT for nearly nothing. But come spring I'll have a 7800GTX so this is a non-issue.

it was just advice man. dont take it personally.

i'd go sli with my 6800gt if someone sold me one for a good price.. i dont think 6800gt sli deserves a :disgust:-face.. its about as fast as a GTX.
and just cuz you can afford it (i can too) doesnt make it awesome ruining things (if you do end up ruining the card).

:frown:
overly flamboyant wasting of cash is not cool really. sounds cliche'd but there are good uses for money like charity, and might get you some good karma in the meantime :D

i personally dont find GT-> Ultra performance difference enough to OC in anyway (coolbits or flashing).. but if i did i'd rather coolbits as theres a much higher chance BFG will replace my card than if its been dicked around and flashed.
i wouldnt even bother sending in a BFG card if i flashed it to an ultra.

Well, I won't say that I enjoy wasting money. My wife would have a real problem with that. :Q But in this case, the risk is minimal and the fun was maximal. And I'm a typical lazy geek, I saved myself some time every time I redo my drivers or redo windows altogether. For me that's win-win. :D

why are there so many a$$hats giving u sh!t for a pretty cool mod that you did? he's already stated it earlier in one of his posts that he doesnt want to redo the settings everytime he does another driver install, etc.

goodjob mega, but get up to date mang! ;)

Thanks mang. :) I'd like to get with the times but I have to wait for tax returns to get my dual core opteron and 7800gtx.

Sounds like you missed the part where A) He didn't flash it to an Ultra bios (read carefully) and B) where this was basically an experiment to see how it easy it was and maximize laziness in the future ;)

I can tell you that setting clock speeds all the time when constantly flipping between drivers is a pain in the butt, if you only rebuild or change drivers very rarely I don't think you get it.

Also, many cards that "fail" after a while of being flashed have a very good chance of being flashed back.... dicked around and flashed. Huh. I would assume that you have never flashed much of anything, then, which is sad. RMA'ing oc'ed stuff is a moral issue anyway, since the warranty is void no matter what methods you use. EVGA allows you to do it under their warranty, so obviously it can't be rocket science.

I don't get what your issue here is, South Pawni. 6800GT SLI deserves whatever because you can sell it and buy one GTX that is as fast and use about half the power and generates half the heat and gives you all sorts of new features like Transparency AA and a lot more shader power. I hardly see this as flamboyant wasting of cash. He just tweaked his card so that it runs at Ultra clocks. If it dies, which I doubt it will, but just in case it does, you can try this argument again.

Mega, thanks for sharing, and since it sounds easy enough over Thanksgiving break I will probably do it to my dads 6800 since he doesn't even understand regedit, etc. and it gets annoying to reset it if/when he has to update drivers.

Water cooling?

Nope just using the stock cooling, which is HUUUUGGEE .. and sounds like a leaf blower when on full throttle:(

Stock settings for My BFG 6800 Ultra OC is 425 GPU clock and 1100 mem clock

So for the stock air cooler this about average for this card .. although i have toyed with the idea of the ultra extreme BIOS which supplies 1.5v to the GPU core, with a stock clock of 450 GPU and 1200 mem which i can already achieve on 1.4v. But possibly achieve higher clocks with the EE BIOS :D

Megatomic: maybe you should try this out .. and if temps permit you could have a better OC, although default clocks are 450, you can use coolbits to reduce the clock if your card cant hanle that speed ;)

Thanks for your post, I agree with you on all points. And good luck with the mod.

I may give that a try one day, but that day won't come until I can't play a game I'm serious about at 1280x1024 with at least medium quality settings. As of today I'm still good to go though. :)
