There are mostly 30-40 year-olds working at the Whole Foods around us. Age isn't the issue, it's the type of employees WF generally attracts.

The difference in opinion/varying abilities to read others' comments has been interesting in this thread. Someone working on a social sciences dissertation would have a field day in ATOT.

I've worked both. Most military jobs are far easier than many retail jobs. My first job after leaving the military was waiting tables. Glad I only had to do it for a couple months until I could find a better gig.

I don't think that mandatory military service would be a bad thing for America, even if it was only for a year or even a summer. i.e. make every kid have to deal with a drill sergeant & boot camp after graduating high school to see what life can really be like & also to toughen them up a bit.

I've thought that also. It might also help curtail the world cop status we have. When it isn't only the poors that get sent to shoot brown people, policy may be adjusted.

They unfortunately wouldn't need to look as far as ATOT. The opinions here seem far less extreme than those I've seen in 'the real world'.

That wasn't really where I was going with that. I was talking about our military adventurism around the world. The preponderance of military is middle class downward. If the rich kids didn't get exceptions and deferments, I think you'd see less world action(which is typically against brown people).
People are whining that Trump's making us less relevant on the world stage. Fucking great! We should be like Switzerland. 80% of Americans probably couldn't point to it on a map, but when you need something exceptional, you call the Swiss, and they do shit right. They'll also fuck you up if you hostilely cross their border. They aren't sitting around in garbage dumps, eating flies cause no one cares about what they think of Iraq. Their lives are pretty good. Keep your head down, mind your own business, and be exceptional is a good way to live.

Also, this weird culture of worship we have for military personnel. I'm appreciative of those who choose to enlist, but let's not pretend anyone that's worn a uniform is a hero/is above anyone else. I'm fairly certain this is a uniquely American belief, and it's bizarre.

In high school, I worked in a grocery store as a cashier. Plenty of assholes came through that store - being an asshole has no age limit.

I sometimes get dreams about my old job. Usually I dream about me having gone back. I'll be getting used to things again and feel kind of nostalgic about everything, but then I see the asshole IT manager and start to regret my decision, thinking "why did I come back here?".
The issue of what makes a job stressful is not so much the job itself but the management. Even a trivial job like a grocery store can be a nightmare if you have some insane asshole managers to deal with. People that make a huge deal out of everything and freak out over every little thing. There is no reason to have to put up with that shit and it's not about "being tough" or whatever. Life is just too short to take that kind of abuse. It's too bad that it's an employer's market and not an employee's market otherwise you could tell those people where to go, but most people are too scared to lose their job because they just have nothing else they can fall back to. Companies know this, so they can get away with abusing employees. "Don't like it? Take the door. Yeah thought so there's no jobs out there, so do what I tell you or I fire you and there's 50 people lining up for your job" That's basically the attitude of companies right now, because they can.

when the founder of Costco passes, i really really hope Costco keeps to its core values and keeps the assholes who come up with the stupid shit that WF is doing out of the building. what looks good on a PowerPoint presentation is utter shit in the real world.
8 straight quarters of dropping revenue usually amps up the pressure on employees in any company

The more "premium" a brand, the more:
1) the customers expect employees to be knowledgeable about the products.
2) the company expects every employee to be a salesperson.
It is not fair, but it is often true.

That's fine, but their pay should reflect that. A buck/hour more than competing stores doesn't cut it(I have no idea what their pay's like).

Agreed, but:
1) Customer expectations are based on what they're paying, not what the employee is paid.
2) Companies are run by people who would rather not do that, and will go to great lengths to avoid it.
When I worked retail, most of the new-hire onboarding I sat through was designed to dangle a carrot (higher pay, job in management, "career prospects", etc.) in order to make a $10/hr employee think they were totally gonna be getting $20/hr someday soon if they just drank the koolaid. It never materialized, for me or anybody else. Fuck me for believing 'em, I guess.
When it comes to relatively high-turnover front line employees, most companies have done the math and would rather lie to (train) a new batch every 2-3 years than actually pay an experienced employee what they deserve. (See also: Circuit City.)

Personally if I ran a company I would be more fair in how I pay my employees and there would be more profit sharing. Low skill jobs would start at minimum wage but there would be a raise ladder to climb over the years and you would be able to make more. So to use a grocery store as an example, someone who has been there for say 5+ years and doing a good job would probably make like 22/hour or something. There would be a cap, but everyone would also collectively get a raise once a year if the company is doing well. Or maybe instead of a raise, a nice bonus. Even that is low to live on with costs of living always going up, but it's still better than 14.
A corporation *CAN* afford that, easily. They just don't want to because if they don't make more profit than the year before then they consider it a failure. That whole system is just ridiculous and not sustainable, you can't ALWAYS make more than the year before. But they do, they find ways. Usually at employee and customer expenses. Crap employee pay/conditions, and crap products. Products in general now days are made way cheaper and cheaper than before and are lower quality. It's not the customers that benefit from the fact that it's cheaper to produce them that way. Some products cost less than they used to be, but they also don't last as long. I would rather pay 2 grand for an appliance and have it last 20+ years and be designed so it's easier to repair if it does break, than to pay $600 for one that breaks after 5 years and is impossible to repair.

Grocery stores are usually a good entry level job, but lots of them are privately held. Publix even is employee owned. Wholefoods expanded too fast and made dumb decisions in their haste for growth.
Sounds like the management who implemented this new inventory system should all be fired. Unfortunately, the grunts are getting screwed by their incompetence

I wouldn't say this is true.
The swiss cultivate relationships and services with the rest of the world. Banking, financial, etc. They rely on others to manage the military power of the world.
Since we are one of the biggest, we don't have that luxury.
Russia only has 150m people. But don't really have any good allies globally so they have to measure up or be pushed around.
I guess you could say China, but I would imagine relations are strained between the language and cultural barriers to say the least.
