CSV is a generic file format (comma seperated values). The Garmin propreitary format is *.gpx and Magellan is *.mgln. The 3225 does not have mp3 capability and a search through the Owners Manual PDF gets -0- hits on mp3. I do not have a 3250 or the Manual PDF.

The 32xx/42xx all can load custom POIs and come with the POI file editor which can import CSV and proprietary formats GPX, WPT, RTE. Proximity alarms can be set for custom POIs but I don't believe they are customizable other than for distance from POI the alarm is triggered.

Is that true after upload 6mil. POI to magellan 3225, the AAA tourbook will disable?
Can we reserve AAA Tourbook in 3225? What is the AAA tourbook does ?
I just got 3225 and I am planning to get 6 mil POI to my 3225. Sorry about this silly questions

1. there is no AAA tourbook on 3225. (so I don't know where you heard about updating to 6 Million POI will disable AAA tourbook.)
2. AAA tourbook is different POI database.
3. AAA tourbook is an set of POI data that provide " saving and discount" for AAA member.

so how does the proximity alert sound? Is it a "beep" sound just like waht u'd hear before notification to make a turn? or, is it a distinctly different sound?

I haven't yet loaded and tested my Red Light Camera and Speed Radar POI file but I'd like to know myself! I'll get to it some time this week.

Actually I was still debating on returning my 3225 for a Nuvi 200W (4.3" screen) since I see it down to $215 but think I'll stick with the 3225. The interface is a bit illogical at times (too many button presses to access certain options like volume) but probably most touch screen interface devices have that problem.

I didn't have to add any memory to the 3225 -- although I'm not sure if you can even if you wanted to.

I have a magellan roadmate 1200 with 1 GB SD Card. My set has only about 54 MB free on the SD Card. I tried copying all the content of original SD Card to a 2 GB SD card and replaced the original us48_poi.poi file with the 200MB file provided by timekeeper. It did not work for me. The GPS does not even boot up.
Has anyone tried this with success?

Any help will be appreciated!

Did you have both downloaded files in the same folder and with the same name (unchanged) as downloaded? It took me a few tries too since I tend to modify the names of files when I download them.

I used unrar (command line). One file is created from the two parts. I won't have a cable for a few days but I'm hoping someone can report success before then.

Hi Hi.

I too am having trouble. How is it that some folks' CRCs pass and others don't? Where did you download the files from (what server)? Level3? GlobalCrossing?

What is the CRC for the compressed files? I have 23720FA5. The lowercase password works (i.e., I see the combined file in the WinRAR UI) but when I attempt to extract the file to a local directory, it complains that the CRC is bad. Any suggestions? Can anyone with a "clean" copy post it to BitTorrent or something else?

BTW, TimeKeeper, thanks for the fish! I'll pass it on!

The 3200 does not come with a PC connection cable and Magellan is late in specifying accessories on their website. I've download and unrar-ed the POI file (thanks TimeKeeper) but cannot do anything with it at the moment.

The backup/restore app (to SD card) does not backup anything other than user created files. It does not present any options to address ROM/RAM directly and the file is not in an editable POI file format. What cable or additional hardware is required to address the ROM/RAM on the 32xx?

Something tells me the 3200 may not have enough ROM/RAM space to accomodate the larger POI file but hopefully I'm wrong.

Like you I have the Maestro 3200. Am very interested in learning whether the expanded POI list will work in the 3200. I have the unrar-ed file ready and have a cable (my Canon camera cable works). Without knowing for certain that this upgrade will work, I don't dare attempt to overwrite the existing file in the 3200 because if something goes wrong in the process, I don't have enough knowledge to make corrections.

I'm guessing you have not read this thread from the beginning.

The 3200 does not have enough RAM available to accomodate a 150MB larger POI file. No way. No how.

In hindsight I'd say the Garvin Nuvi 200 for < $200 is a better deal than the Magellan Maestro 3200. I believe it ships with 6 million POI. Since the 200W (4.3" screen) can be found for a little over $200 I would get that instead of the 200 if you choose not to go with the 3225 and update the POI file.

Without the POI enhancement I would definitely have abandoned the 32xx series. No Circuit City or Best Buy found by the 3200 in the Washington, DC area in the original database though there are at least a couple of dozen. With the POI update it finds them all (or so it seems).

mmoneytalks gave step by step instructions on page 2 of the thread.

If you have successfully downloaded and uncompressed the POI file to a single file that is ~193MB you have very little else to do. The 3225 shows up just like a USB flash drive when connected to a PC and the original POI file on the 3225 is not even write protected.

The first time I connected my 3225 I made an uncompressed zip file of everything on it. I haven't needed it but it is good to have.

If anyone does not understand the instructions in mmoneytalks earlier post or what I'm saying in this post you should have a friend help you or perhaps return the 3225 for another model. :)

Hello Webazoid,

I loaded the "red light camera.mgln" file and drove to the nearest photo enforced signal. The unit did the Beep-Beep and then read out the category name using TTS (in my case "Atlanta Red-Light camera ahead"). But I could not find a way to hook up a .mp3 (we probably cant... anyone, please correct me if i am wrong). So, i guess naming the category appropriately should do the trick. Hope this helps...

I am unable to download the files from the site at the links that are provided. After clicking the "free" button, it says that the limit for downloads has been reached. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I think the site only allows one download per IP in 3 hours. Guess u can try releasing/renewing ur IP address and then try again.

Well, I did read the entire thread. But obviously my eyes weren't! Sorry

Were you referring to the Nuvi interface as a bit illogical? I've never tried the Garmin but I may order the 200W.\ with the price falling. From what I read, though, their maps are older than the Maestros. I really like the Maestro interface but would like the extra POIs. I should have gotten the 3210 when Dell had it for 199. .

Wow. Weird. I was finally able to download a non-corrupt version of both files. I had to use internet explorer (vs. FireFox) to do it. Also, I used the Level3 mirror (just Level3, not Level3#2 or Level3#3 its ilk). Really bizarre.

I was referring to the 32xx interface as a bit illogical at times. Under System Options (which takes a couple of presses from the map screen) the first item is the seldom used Region selection and getting to volume and brightness is a couple of more presses from there. Also, once you hit the Menu button they should present all icons (instead of 3 of 5) without having to hit the right arrow.

I have not tried the Nuvi but although it does not have multidestination routing like the Maestro 32xx, it does allow you to set a via point for a route by scrolling the map and selecting it. This is something I think I'd use more frequently in the Washington, DC area when travelling to nearby suburbs than multidestination routing. The Maestro allows you to select a destination that way but not a via point.

There are often multiple possible routes and the best will vary with the time of day and hitting exclude and waiting for a recalc often takes too many steps before it presents the option I'd like. Of course it recalcs and gets it right once I'm one my way but I'd prefer to select the main road from the start for local trips where I know part of the way.

I thought I read somewhere (though I'm not sure) that Garmin has updated the Nuvi maps within the last 60 days so I'm guessing they are as recent as the Maestro 32xx. Yes the 3210 from Dell was a good deal at $199 since it includes the AAA Guidebook though it does not have TTS which some people value.

If the Nuvi 200W was as cheap a couple of weeks ago as it is now I think I may have jumped on it and not looked back. Being able to zoom in and still see plenty of surrounding stuff seems pretty desirable.

The maps on the Maestro 3225 are recent as of 3rd quarter 2006. According to a magellan tech support representative, I was told that the next update to the NAVTech maps is not expected until around June 2008.

I got a magellan 3225 gps in canada costco for $199 (cad). (for a few days it was 179 at etoboke store)

I downloaded the larger us48_...poi file. However there were and are existing poi files in the unit as follows:
pr_poi.poi 339k, canada_poi.poi 17,356kb alaska_poi.poi 469kb hi_poi.poi 868k

My question is , are there larger canada_poi.poi files on the unit from which you got the larger us48 file?
(and the same question for puerto rico, alaska and hawaii.)
After I put on the expanded file, I still could not find any SAMS stores..(but I was searching from region canada). Are they in your expanded poi ? (sams being the competitor of costco, if costco had anything to do with it they probably wouldn't be there)

Interestingly, the unit seems more updated. The map files are the same i guess-- version 29(I believe)
The firmware is 1.26 (not 1.14 as yours), the hardware version is -2 not -1 or -0 as yours.

Is this firmware, traditional firmware? or does it include some changes to the registry etc that is more traditonally known as software. For example, the different voice files, etc is usually not considered firmware, but application stuff...but does it have a version number? Perhaps the hardware version -2 refers to the traditional firmware/hardware? I am not that familiar with winCE terms, but I would have assumed they are no different than other window terms. However, For example in the application directory, there is a 1.26 firmware dll. (dated 9/6/2007)...so maybe the 1.26 refers to the application?

The voice is loud, and the very same voice seems to announce the streets as announce the other stuff, in the same loudness, which is different from what the initial review stated.

I suspect the voice files are different from what the initial revewer had on his system, and perhaps just a change in files could result in the voice consistency.

How large is the aaa file? what is it called? I guess putting it on would involve more than just the aaa file .. hm..maybe i need to get a 3250 for awhile....

As you all know, THere is 2 gig on this unit,. of which 600meg is unused (after putting the 200 meg -poi file)..

What is involved with putting europe or mexico maps on this unit? It does not appear you can buy anything on the magellan web site.

Could one just copy a mexican map to the unit and have it work? There would have to be a way to add the mexican region also to the selection mechanism, and that is probably in some other program. I guess I could scan the binary for the name of the files..or maybe change the name ie lose one...replace the us or canada or prhialaska map with a mexicanone for example. or can you just add another map file.. maybe need to modify the index also. There is just one Has anyone tried this?.

(Has anyone used this for anything else? Did u notice the documentation picture says there is an fm antenna.. but none on this unit..ie pic does not match the unit. also my unit has a picture of what appear to be earphones on the back by the usb--. does yours?
I am not sure what the sd card could be used for other than user poi -- . any ideas?? I guess playing music or pictures would involve modifying the shell to call something else...but that speaker would not do mozart very well... so much for that idea unless those are earphones..-- excuse these last comments--sometimes my mind wanders)

I noticed at least one CIBC bank had 3 occurrances of poi, all with the same address etc. Is there a program to get rid of/identify redundant POI? I guess I should try to find out which poi file (s ) have them. Maybe i can get rid of the canada.poi and see if there are canadian poi in the expanded us poi?? any one know? I must admit I have been away from gps for awhile. My last experience was the EMAP unit of garmin 5 or 8 years ago.. Guess we have come quite away. (been using streets and trips with my pc)

I have not taken the time to test drive the garmen and the tomtom cheap units. This unit has tts which I really like, and I don't think they do, but are they much more usable in any other significant way?

My 3225 is firmware 1.14 and maps ver 29. I have been reading about 3250s and 4250s with firmware 2.24

There doesn't seem like anyway to update the firmware from the Magellan Support site. Has anyone had luck getting updated firmware.

Does anybody try to add more funtionality to 3225 like foto and music? Can we do that since Magellan Roadmate 6000T has these capabilties.
