Hey guys, I just ran accross the most tedious problem in all of my computing years. Now I just installed reformated and installed XP SP2, and when I transfered over some .avi files from my backup drive, the most annoying thing happens. Whenever I put my mouse on top of the .avi file explorer crashes. I'm running a Radeon 9800 with the latest driver, now did this happen to anyone else? And if it did can u tell me if there is any way to fix this?

Possibly a codec problem, your AVI's may be some funky divx/xvid thing and explorer is trying to query the file to find out it's features.

What codec packs (if any) have you installed?

Well so far I installed Matroska Pack v1.0.3 and an AC3 codec. I also thought it may be the codecs, because they weren't the same ones that I had before the format, but I don't really know how to remove all these codecs except through device manager, is that the only way to get rid of them, or are there different ways?

Codec packs are teh noes.

Anyone remember a Scooby Doo episode where some old geezer (ghost?) with an oustretched hand chants: "Coooiiinnn!"?

DO NOT install one of those Codec Packs. They are NOT intended to have ALL the codecs in them installed. You are only supposed to install the codecs you need from them.

Installing multiple codecs that handle the same files will cause all kinds of problems.

The ONLY one codec you need to install is FFDShow and the AC3 filter. That handles EVERYTHING (Divx, Xvid, etc). I explain this in detail here: http://soldcentralfl.com/flyingpenguin/penguin_blog.shtml#divx-fix
