I agree

how did this turn into a oakland-yankees-red sox debate

stick to the point!

Well, a Red Sox fan calling Oakland fans classless is what did it for me. Anyone from the Ben Afflek school of fannism calling any other fan classless is really quite ridiculous.

Phillies/Billy Wagner > Mets

He will most likely be prosecuted for assault, I don't see how he could possibly win in a court of law...

On MSNBC today, Francisco has been arrested for the chair-throwing incident... So I guess the players aren't above the law afterall...

well it remains to be seen if he's convicted.

Yup, on ESPN.com they're now reporting he was arrested.

Btw did anyone watch this on mlbtv? I wonder if they got some nice video of it, I'll check it when I get home from work 😉

While I do not condone Francisco's behavior and I do think he should at least be subject to some kind of legal reprimand, I have to wonder what kind of extreme heckling the fans were subjecting the players to that they would retaliate thusly. I mean, you must figure that players get heckled at every ballpark except maybe their home field, but they don't explode all that often.

While the jury is out for me whether or not fans have the right to behave like morons/jackasses just because they paid $xxx for a ticket, it's definitely not advisable considering that players can be much closer than they appear. So it's not like the fans (or at least the stadium security) could not have foreseen this kind of incident.

They will probably have to close off all bullpens from the fans now (opposing teams anyhow). Most of the major problems have been from incidents in opposing bullpens (aside from the crazy man jumping out of the stands and beating down the 1st base coach).

I just watched the extended highlights on MLBTV and they didnt show it all. I can watch the regular game, but I'm too lazy to hunt through to find the incident.

i watched the game.. it sure was crazy...the stadium PA guy kept advising the fans to stay off the field or oakland would be forced to forfeit..funny considering the fans never went on the field. But yeah, don't fvck with oaktown

Meh. This fan dude ought to step up and fight him like a man. If you're gonna talk smack, you'd better be able to back it up. Your ticket doesn't give you the right to say sh!t and not made to cry like a little girl!

Actually your ticket does give you the right to say shit, I can't believe people are defending the player, he threw a chair into the crowd and you're saying the fan should step up like a man? What a joke. If Pete Rose gets banned from baseball for gambling, this idiot definately should be banned.

Next time I go to a BB/FB game, I'm gonna have to check my stubs.

First of all, I'm not saying that the fan should have stepped up after the player threw a chair into the stands. The player threw a chair into the stands because the fans were on his case. Although, I'm afraid that he may have hit the wrong fans, and I would have prefered that he run up the stands and beat the right guy's ass(a la Vernon Maxwell style).

While I don't condone assaulting anyone, my point is that this guy(the fan) behaving like a complete dick. The joke's on the fan who thinks he's untouchable because he paid $xxx amount of money. I have season tickets to a few sports, and I've witnessed firsthand how ugly some fans can get. I can't say that I feel bad to see that a mouthy little bitch got owned(or not, because I doubt that the chair hit the right fans). I would have understood if a guy reacts to another guy saying stuff at a bar/club, and I understand it now.

Can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen and relinquish your multi-million dollar salary to play a ballgame.

Everyones saying that the pitcher was above the law because he's a star (before he got arrested). What I don't see is if the pitcher is above the law aren't the fans also? Isn't yelling out to a pitcher that their "mother is a cawksucker" defined as harrassment? Not that the fan said that, but just using that instance as an example. Because you paid for a ticket you're allowed to harrass people i.e. breaking the law?

Most of the fans at the A's games are no0t from Oakland.

I'm sure there was some obnoxious asshole in the bleachers talking smack. I've seen them at Giants and Dodger games too and I'm sure the Red Sox have some themselves. I live in the Boston area and I can assure you that there are plenty of morons that are Red Sox fans. Are all Sox fans morons? Definately not (most of my friends are Sox fans as is my GF and her son) but there are enough around where wearing a Yankees cap or shirt can be hazardous to your health. One of the most popular shirts in the Boston area has "Yankees suck" on the front and "Jeter Swallows" on the back. At Fenway they won't let you in wearing that shirt.

I love how this thread turns anti-Red Sox. Zimmer shouldn't have charged and got EXACTLY what was coming to him.

As far as Oakland's fans, I've been hearing a lot about how what has been happening there does not represent their fans entirely, but... I was at that Sox-A's game. All around me, you got people flipping Manny off, yelling out strings of curses, and then there was the whole throwing the trash on the field thing. As far as I'm concerned, these A's fans, and ANY other fan that resorts to these types of things, are trash themselves.

I know for a fact at Camden Yards if you act like that (yelling obscenities), you will be escorted out. They won't tolerate behavior like that, and I applaud them for it. Oakland, on the other hand, seems to fall short of this standard. They should have security guards in every opposing bullpen at all times, no if's/ands/buts. I think this could have been prevented, but hey Oakland is too cheap to keep their superstars even though they're not a small market team, so it fits right in with skimping on the security bill. 😉

They do the same thing at Oakland as I have witnessed it on more than one occasion.

Last night must have been an exception to the rule... hard to believe that security would allow TX, or any teams' players to jump into the stands...

Did the guy jump into the stands?

Edit. nobody jumped into the stands. However some of the Rangers players stated that a few of the fan really went over the line. THose fans should have been escorted out of the stadium and given a lifetime ban. Just because they purchased a ticket doesn't mean they should act like classless assholes. Maybe you are right SP33D, maybe it was some Raider fans who happened upon some A's tickets😉

Yeah, I wasn't sure if the black guy(?) next to Francisco in the pic was a rangers' player or fan, it appears to be a fan... regardless the players were all at the edge of the seats, that is within punching range... won't be able to tell until I see the game on mlbtv tonight. Yup, probably Raider jerks lol. Although, the lady whose nose got mashed is actually the wife of the guy that Francisco was trying to hit! So now he will be rich after the lawsuit for provoking a player, that's just f'd up. Somebody needs to take him out back and shoot that filth in the noggin with a nailgun. While you're at it, get Karim Garcia and Jeff Nelson as well 😉

But the wildness occured when a fan was mouthing off at Frank Francisco who had to be restrained by security and his whole team, who ended up throwing a chair into the crowd and hitting a few people.

It's absolutely inexcusable and classless is what it is.

The players AND fans of today in many professional sports in American have degenerated in terms of class and decorum.

I love the game. Anyone that would dishonor the game deserves to be punished swiftly and severly. Whether they are a player, fan, manager, or owner doesn't matter.

As for Frank Francisco, I can't imagine that he heard anything worse that what Jackie Robinson heard every day, or what Hank Aaron heard the year he broke Babe Ruth's record.

Not to mention the hate leveled at Jesse Owens during the 1936 Olympics by Adolf Hitler.

And justice for all,
PCM

SP33Demon,

ESPN's take on the fight

Sorry to not let this drop already, but Tim Hudson is my favorite player. How about we agree that no one is positive what happened? There no difinitive answer. We can go back and forth insulting each other's players, but what good would that do?

I see your point about someone attacking. And no, I don't think Zim was justified in going after Pedro. I thought it was pretty dang stupid. But then again I thought the whole fight was. It was just normal Yankee/Red Sox hatred being thrown about. I just think there was a better way to handle it than driving him into the ground.

Back on topic though, I don't believe an athlete should let anything a fan says get to them. Fans aren't rational. They are saying anything to screw with the other team. You need to not even listen to them. It's not like they have anything important to say to the athletes anyway. But there is a huge difference between words and throwing a chair. If they piss you off that bad, insult them back.

It does remind me of when I saw Griffey Jr (when he was still playing for Seattle) at a game. Yankees/Mariners in Seattle. I was in the standing room area of Safeco with some friends and a bunch of people getting drunker and drunker. They were razing Griffey relentlessly (no idea why there were in Seattle - I guess they were Yankee fans) and eventually he started mouthing back. You could tell he was pissed- but he didn't start throwing things.
