omg

Its like a bad melodrama.

How empowering it must be for Couric. Mad props to her.

This is only gonna make the women voters flee from Palin. No respect for her for this stunt.

Will she have McCain to back her up everytime she gets in a rut?

Next thing you know she won't be able to debate without big daddy cain there.

It was one of McCain's "maverick" moves to pick her.
Palin vs Biden answer
In that interview, note what she said about the Supreme court decisions. Then take a look over here, where she commented on --gasp-- a Supreme court case!
Law
In that June 25 decision, the Court said the punitive damage award, originally set by a jury at $5 billion, was excessive under maritime law and knocked it down to $507 million. Last week Exxon Mobil agreed to begin paying out some of the award, though a dispute remains over interest.

...
After the Supreme Court ruled, Gov. Palin was critical of the outcome. "I am extremely disappointed with today's decision by the U.S. Supreme Court," she was quoted as saying. "While the decision brings some degree of closure to Alaskans suffering from 19 years of litigation and delay, the Court gutted the jury's decision on punitive damages." She also said, "It is tragic that so many Alaska fishermen and their families have had their lives put on hold waiting for this decision. My heart goes out to those affected, especially the families of the thousands of Alaskans who passed away while waiting for justice."

WOW, Palin's part of that, starting at 2:11 in, was just painful and pathetic. :brokenheart: :Q

The sad part is that people like this will still vote for Palin / McCain anyways simply because Barack's middle name.

Wow

She couldn't even name Exxon Shipping v. Baker from June 2008:

The U.S. Supreme Court?s decision Wednesday slashing the damages Exxon Mobil (XOM) must pay as a result of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill could have unexpectedly wide-ranging consequences. An award to Alaskan fishermen and other residents was reduced from $2.5 billion to about $500 million.

I hate to defend Palin, but that's what Federalism is.

No, it's not. The Federalists, like John Adams, were for a stronger NATIONAL government.

The famous Federalist papers, written primarily by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, were published in support of adopting the Constituiton, which provided for a MUCH stronger federal (national) government than the then existing Articles of Confederation had.

You simply can't say that the Federalists thrust was states rights. That's idiocy.

Sarah Palin is an unapologetic ignoramus. She is a disgrace and a national embarrassment.

EDIT: Perknose beat me to it. But I think she heard the word "Federalist" one day and thought it sounded "awesome" and that was that.

Yep.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_federalism

EDIT: Some other people got in before me, but from my reading of it, Federalism is much more than either "the federal government has more power" or "the states have more power." Federalism is more about strictly separating the roles of the federal and state governments, giving states specific freedoms to set much of their own policies.

Really, her answer to the Roe v. Wade thing makes sense. She, like other Republicans, knows that Roe v. Wade isn't going to be overturned by the SCOTUS, so she promotes the gradual passage of more restrictions on abortion at the state level. Same goes for a whole lot of other controversial measures that might be popular in certain states but can't gain national traction (such as an explicit ban on gay marriage).

The other thing is that she was asked if there were any rulings she disagreed with, and if she could name any. I could see this being tough if you haven't studied it a bit. I can't think of a ruling that I strongly disagree with right off the top of my head. There was the one that Brown v. Board of Education overturned, Plessy v. Ferguson, but I had to look that one up. And, of course, it's not a current ruling.

Can you think of a recent SCOTUS ruling that most Republicans would disagree with? DC v. Heller was a win for them (even Obama said he supported the ruling). I guess giving habeas rights to Guantanamo detainees would be a loss for them, but it would look pretty bad for her to come out and say she disagrees with that because it's a major Bush issue in an election where they want to get away from Bush.

Since I am obviously unfamiliar with the particular definition of Federalism that you refer to, could you please explain it to me based on what I posted instead of insulting me?

Do you really know so little about your own country's basic political history?

Why did you so confidently post "Yep", then? You insulted yourself. :|

You'd think she ought to be able to remember a ruling that affected Alaska directly, her family personally, and happened while she was governor.

The Exxon Valdez spill was "one of the most devastating man-made environmental disasters ever to occur at sea." While it did happen nearly twenty years ago, the affects are still being felt in Alaska. It has affected the commercial fishing industry (which ought to be note worthy as her husband claims to be a lifelong commercial fisherman). The SCOTUS decision to slash the punitive damages came down around three months ago. She no doubt made her opinion known to the press with quotes in print and appearances on TV.

A ruling that affects her, her family, happened this summer, and she can't recall it. Either she cracks easily under Couric's pressure or has the memory of a goldfish. I'm not certain which is worse.

And if Palin meant New Federalism, she probably should have said New Federalism. Sort of how York isn't quite the same as New York or conservative not quite the same as neo-conservative.

I wouldn't vote for you for VP either, and despite the fact that I could have named a couple of SC cases I wouldn't expect people to vote for me.

Seriously, the country needs to get over this notion that our leaders shouldn't be more intelligent and informed than the average American.

This stupid idea that we should only elect people that we want to have a beer with will be the end of the United States as a first-world country.

Yeah, I should have just referred to New Federalism at the beginning. I thought she may have been using the term "Federalist" to mean a modern incarnation of it, and stupidly assumed that everyone was referring to New Federalism. But that's basically the opposite of colonial-era Federalism, so it was dumb of me to even talk about them in the same context.

And you're right about the Exxon Valdez thing. Funny she couldn't remember it for the interview - she has commented on it in the past and of course she strongly disagreed with it for taking so long and for reducing the damages awarded to the people affected by it.

EDIT: For the record, I don't like Sarah Palin at all.

When did Laura say that?

I am still trying to find the RvW that was talked about.I assume it is in the videos as I am not finding it in the transcripts
