Here is a tip to figure out if a PayPal e-mail is a scam:

IT HAS A LINK TO PAYPAL IN THE E-MAIL = SCAM

Another hint is that instead of Dear Member, it'll be Dear Your Full Name

Also, PayPal will always refer to you by name in the e-mail and not address you as "Paypal Member".

How about if it ever asks you to confirm anything by SENDING YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO, it's a scam.

If you almost got tricked by something that stupid do yourself a favor and just publish your account name and password right now. It will save you the trouble of giving it away in the future. You're an accident waiting to happen. It's not if your account is going to get compromised, it's simply a matter of when.

Come to think of it, I have been getting an increasing number of emails from PayPal lately.

Any unsolicited email requesting any type of sensitive information is a scam.

Sweet, I just got an e-mail that my gas bill is due in two weeks.

I told my mom about this sort of thing when she got a Paypal account. The only way she ever goes to Paypal's website is to type in the whole address, including the https. She also knows not to give out any personal information to any company when she's not the one who initiated the call. It's nice to have at least one parent who is resistant to scam attempts.
