Whoa bay area quake

Yeah I felt it. It started as a dull shaking and then there was a very sharp jolt that shook my house quickly. It wasn't that bad though. I was around for the Loma Prieta earthquake in 89 and that was way more scary. If I could describe the 89 earthquake and give it justice it was like that strong jolt we just felt lasting for about a minute.

Yeah but only in about a few million years from now. Events like that take a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, etc..... long time to happen. Part of California is on the Pacific plate that is slowly shifting away from North America but again that won't happen anytime in our life time or our great, great, great grand children's life time.

Yeah. When I was a kid and was told that could happen I always imagined some epic and catastrophic one time event where the ground just caves in.

Speaking on behalf of the continental USA, we sure hope so.

You know, it doesn't really matter. Arizona will just be the next target for illegal immigrants... 😀

The truth can be so depressing sometimes. I wish there was a way to speed the process up.

If we are going we will be sure to take Oregon with us. Bite your tongue.

Ya, it actually woke me up. I don't think anything in my house fell down though. Then again I don't make a habit of balancing a penny on a pinhead so I'm good to go. It was a pretty decent one this time though.

The thing in your car is the BRAKE pedal, which operates the BRAKES, which you use to BRAKE when someone cuts you off.

However, a BREAK in the earth's crust is what causes earthquakes, which can shake things up until they BREAK, hopefully not during your lunch BREAK.

Note the different spelling.

You have quakes there and we have hurricanes. I prefer a hurricane over an earthquake.

Having experienced both, you're wrong.

Volcanoes are even worse, though.

I felt it. Found my toothbrush on the ground in the morning, too. I've resolved to store it in the medicine cabinet to prevent that in the future.

Did it land face up or face down?

There have been such quakes, but I don't think that magnitude quake is possible currently in CA. I'm talking about the kind of quake that happens maybe every 20 years somewhere on earth (Richter 8.6 - 9). The 1906 quake was maybe 7.8 (most widely accepted value, according to Wikipedia). A stronger quake than that here is unlikely, and in the region where this one hit (Oakland), not more than 7.3 is predicted. The Chilean earthquake of 1960, the Alaskan of 1964 (?) and a quake in Asia in 1920 were catastrophic events that caused geographical reconfigurations.

I can understand that. At least you get a few days warning. A damned EQ can destroy everything in less than a minute with no warning at all. However, if you don't evacuate before a huge hurricane you can be in for hell. I just saw Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke. Formidable power!!!

Nature's bad boys:

Earthquakes/Tsunamis
Hurricanes
Tornados
Floods
Fires
Lightning

Man's:

All manner of warfare including nuclear annihilation

I've seen Spike Lees movie too. I can't imagine a cat 1 hurricane with 75+ sustained let alone 140+ with gusts up to 200+ mph. They even said the surge wasn't as "bad" as they forecasted because the way the hurricane hit.

And I agree about a EQ. I would never want to be in one. At least in California they're more prominent. Though if we ever had one in NJ, everybody would think a nuke went off or the apocalypse had arrived.
