"Who would you save" comes true

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — As his wife floundered screaming for help in murky river water, a frantic New Zealand man was forced to abandon a bid to rescue his teenage son to save his partner from drowning, he said Monday.
Stacy Horton saved his wife, Vanessa, 35, as their son Silva, 13, drowned in the Whanganui River on North Island after her car plunged into the river late Saturday.

He can make more kids. He only has one wife.

no guarantees you can ever produce again, and you can always find another mate to help support your current son.

that logic can be used in both ways, yes?

but shit that would be rough. Turning away from a current rescue to start a new rescue? That could have went bad and both ended up drowning.

But also, a male son, even if only 13, can be seen as close enough to physical maturity that rough times in nature can have the outcome entirely decided by the offspring.

I think I just tried to weigh about 10 different opinions in my head. Too. Many. Damn. Voices. ... Head. Hurts. !

I once had a dream that I had to choose between atot and a woman..

I'd have saved the Miller Lite.

OK, that was terrible. I feel bad for the family, it's terrible to have to live with that for the rest of your life.

Now she is going to hate him forever for letting their son die. Now he not only lost his son, he will lose half of everything to his wife after a divorce. 🙁

He fails at diving. The article says the car was only like 3 feet below the surface, and he said he heard his wife screeming when he got there so presumably she was already on the surface.

You fail at physics and need to watch Mythbusters. Large objects sinking take things down with it, even if they're already at the surface above it and not even touching it.

Definitely sad. He tried for his son first, and realized he couldn't get to him. Then he understood that continuing after his son could wind up killing all three of them, and saved his wife.

It's a terrible decision to have to make, but it was probably the right one. It also says something about his ability to think under pressure.

You are right Nik, the vacumm that this creates is unbelievable.

You go with the best odds, and the least risk to yourself. It doesn't help anyone if the rescuer becomes a victim. Shitty decision, but what are you gonna do?
