Whoever the president appoints (with senate confermation). That's how whoever followed nixon got into office (ford or maybe carter)

But are the Republicans ready for a black de facto president?

I know I'm ironizing on the "de facto", but the question could become true in every sense if something happens to George.

I'm not sure that Powell would take his place.

Colin
Dick
Bush

Am I the only one looking at three of the most powerful politicians in America and getting a scary picture of our future?

Wallet I'm not sure who it is, but it would really matter unless that's who bush picks. The line of succession only matters if the president dies, because we don't really NEED the VP (for a little while)

Well if the President & Vice President are killed or removed I read somewhere that the Speaker of the House is the #3 man. But i don't know........ I'm Canadian.

if both the pres. and vp are killed at the same time, then the speaker takes office.
but if the pres dies, then the VP becomes pres, and then they appoint a new VP I think,

if the VP dies, I think it used to be that the pres just finished his term w/o a VP, but I think now they appoint one

Article 25, section 2, of the Constitution:

"Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress."

:)

And the line of Presidental succession I've got goes to 16 places, starting with Spkr. of the House, Pres. Pro Tempore of the Senate, Sec. of State, Treas., Defense, Att'y Gen., all the way to Sec. of Education in 16th. Guess the next one on the list gets it by fistfight...lol.

I think I read somewhere that way back when, there was a pres who didn't want to be sworn in on the scheduled day of Sunday for religious reasons, so they postponed it a day.. and the leaving president wasn't pres anymore, so for one day, the Speaker was the president, but he didn't know it, and slept the whole day

something along those lines.

I love these "What-If's". :)

Ok, I had that feeling that it was up to the president to nominate whoever he wanted. But the question still remains.

Who would it be if we presume that the party wouldn't let Powell get the nomination? What other person in the party is just as powerfull as Powell and Cheney right now?

I know I'm leaving the door open for mockery, but the question is serious. I don't know much about the Republican party.

I thought the last one would be the post master, but I could be wrong.

If Bush has to succeed without dick, bush is going to be in for some serious problems. He'll be playing hardball with only him and colin as the serious leaders. Granted, Colin is competant, but without Dick, Bush's last leg is withered down to the cold, hard bone. I can't think of any other leader who can fill dick's spot.

I think Cheney is easily replaceable. Somehow he has lately been seen as an intellectual powerhouse, but I think there are obvious reasons for that. Powell won't take the job I don't think. He could have been a VP candidate before or even run for president. I personally think he'd make an excellent de facto president. Bush is a puppet of the whole party, not just Cheney himself. Thus I don't think he'll be that lost without Cheney.

Maybe he would just nominate Gore. All the liberals would just implode trying to love and hate Bush at the same time.

Dick won't have to quit - the job's gonna kill him. How many plugs has he had to remove since the campaign and election? Two or three? He's just waitin for the big one. Seriously though, Colin Powell will surprise us, I think, and will do an outstanding job. And I'm not a republican.
