We're talking about this and a number of variations of 10 x 8 hybrids. Management is trying to help cushion the rise in gas prices through scheduling. I only have 3 miles to drive so I don't really care....

My idea was to work 5, 8 hour days and 4 10 hour days over the course of 2 weeks and end up with 1, 3 day weekend every other week. It would basically work out that you could do 10, 10, 8, 8, 8 one week and 10, 10, 8, 8, off another. That at least spreads out the long days so you're not working late every day.

Or, people could work from home two days of the week... schedule it around and you can save on office space needed.

5 * 7 hours in summer (May 15. to Sept 15.)

5 * 7h 45min in winter

I guess 4 * 8h 45 minutes in summer would be even better, but thats not an option :(

Worked 4x10 paintin houses as a summer job a few summers ago, was a great schedule. I now work 8:30 - 4:30 in an office building and would much rather have 4x10 rather than 5x8.

I think 10 hour days are more effective for contracting type jobs, they give you more time to really get set up, complete part of a project, and clean up. Cleaning up after a day of painting
is at least a 40 minute job (sprayer takes a while). With an 8 hour day and a 1 hour lunch, there just isnt enough time. For my IT job, it doesn't really matter, tasks don't normally take a
long time and it's not like I have to worry about cleaning up towards the end of the day.

Still would take 4x10 no matter what.

Every once in a while, I'd hit a construction job that was 4-10's. I loved it, even though I knew that sooner or later, it'd turn into 5-10's, then 6-10's and more...BUT, the overtime is always a nice benefit of the extra hours.
When you're used to working 8's, 10 hour shifts take some getting used to, but once you get used to them, they're not bad. Should they ever decide to go back to 8's, you'll feel like you're only working half a day...

If your not doing physical labor and sitting on your ass, 10 hour days are easy.

Unless your working overnights, hehe.

I have 5x7.5 so 4x10 would probably mean more work. Although the extra day off would be nice.

I work eight 10 hr days (or longer) in a row, then get six days off. The way it falls, I get four days in a pay week. I work Tuesday to Tuesday, alternating with another guy, then get Wednesday through Monday off, so I end up with every other weekend off. It's great, and the schedule is the only thing that really makes my job worth the hassle.

Overnight pharmacist maybe? Or dr/nurse? Those are the only professions I know of with those type schedules.

My mom does those, they let her kind of schedule it however she wants, but the way you have it set up sounds best anyway. 4-day weekends are hard to beat - if you ever want to go somewhere, you can leave Thursday night (when fewer people are going to travel) and come back Monday afternoon (again, when fewer people are going to travel).

I do 10-12 hour days all the time as a grad student and the time just flies by. It's easy

That is my dream schedule. you are so lucky man. another 2 hours on your shift isn't that bad either, it's the 12 hour days that really kill you.

I wish. I actually work at Food Lion's Distribution Warehouse as a lead man. I'm the first there and one of the last to leave. It pays good though, and not too hard. I just have to deal with idiots all the time, but you find those anywhere.
