Who won the debate?

I always find this an interesting question. Does winning entail who was a better 'debater'? Or simply who answered the questions better?

Biden hands down. Palin played it extremely safe by repeating campaign and party lines. Her biggest plus in the debate was not screwing up even though she did slam the entire East Coast of the US in one of her remarks about "Those people's" politicians hampering Alaska's energy needs. This statement was made when she was talking about our energy problems. Then again if not screwing up is is considered a win then expectations were bottom of the barrel low for her period. Which means a potted plant with a McCain ad tape player attached to it could of done just as good as she did.

It was a victory of sorts for Palin since she didn't have any major meltdowns.

As far as actually being substantive, though, Biden won. He also came across as human which is good. :p

I think it's more of a draw, but Biden does have a slight edge if any.

Empirically, I think Biden won rather easily. The thing is, though, the expectations were VERY low for Palin, so she won merely by being in the same area code as Biden at the end. My guess is that the polls will draw closer over the next few days, but ultimately Obama will continue to lengthen his lead as the election draws closer.

What is that word for something related to a nucleus? N something. I can't think of what it is... OR HOW TO PRONOUNCE IT.

Win? What's to win? Both candidates said exactly what they planned to say, neither answered anything directly, and both did lots of finger pointing (particularly Biden). Nothing was debated. Neither broke down and did anything rash (Biden was a bit overdramatic a couple of times, Palin seemed to be trying to hard to be cutesy).

These debates are ridiculous; each candidate knows the media will take 4-second snippets and replay them over and over; it's a race to get the best 4-second snippet. Stupid. We had better debates in Philosophy 101.

- Use traceable facts (not random numbers!)
- Stick to the topic; reply directly to statements from your opponent

Biden was simply incredible tonight. Not only did he lay out Obama's argument well, he connected well with the people.

I voted draw... I think Biden did better on the issues, but Palin had low expectations and all she had to do was be likeable and not look like a nitwit, she did good with both. In the end I think Biden had the edge, but the reps will probably get a small boost from this, because Palin held her own.

Who would I rather have coaching my kids soccer team? Without a doubt Palin

Who would I rather have backing up my president? Without a doubt Biden

The poll on Drudge is 73 to 23 in Palin's favor. I think this forum is out of touch with the Real America.

This is how McCain will win in November and you'll be surprised. You live in an elitist intellectual bubble while Joe Six Pack is out doing middle class things, like voting. Obama just doesn't have enough experience. Enough experience being White, that is!

Neither lost, Palin did well because she exceeded low expectations, and Biden did well because he exceeded expectations by being anything but super windy and condescending.

Overall Palin ducked too many questions with a noun verb, I am a hockey Mom and me and McCain are mavericks. Biden, IMHO did far better on substance and probably won more uncommitted and independents.

Neither hit a home run, more like a walk for both than anything else.

But as the polls shift strongly to Obama and away from McCain, Palin did not have a strong enough performance to even stop the bleeding. And Biden did nothing to give Palin an iota of sympathy.

And so much for any Gwen Ifall bias.

MSNBC had Biden winning by 79 percent. I bet you would find a higher number for Palin if Rush took it, and the same for Biden on Air America. The number you posted for Palin is precisely what one could expect from Drudge.

biden DOMINATED that debate... it wasn't even close.

the defining moment, for me, was whenever biden was talking about how he knows what it's like to struggle being a single father of two kids because his wife and daughter died... the way he said it and what he said and how he tied it all into the question was very powerful and kinda made it seem like palin better not even try to say anything to follow that and just let the moderator ask a new question.
