Who will not be purchasing Far Cry 2 because of its DRM?

Sadly, I have to say I won't be purchasing Far Cry 2 based on the included DRM and limited number of installs. This might be an unpopular opinion but I think it is a valid one.

1.) I refuse to buy a game with heavy DRM and limited installs. The developer and the publisher are losing my money.

2.) I don't pirate games. I won't get to enjoy Far Cry 2, even though I could pirate it like many, many will.

3.) A search of mini-nova has over 200 torrents for complete and cracked versions of Far Cry 2 ready to download. The DRM isn't stopping anyone from pirating this game, it IS stopping people from buying it.

I haven't bougth any game with a DRM install limit until the publisher has decided to remove that limit. Seems like that is how a growing number of pc gamers are deciding to go and it's up to the publishers to learn.

Of course. I don't have unlimited funds to buy PC games, I'm not a millionaire. I will spend the money on a game that will not include heavy DRM.

Why not just buy the game to support the developer, and then pirate it if you want more installs?

Because it also supports the publisher, and they'll just think that nobody cares enough not to buy it. And then they'll look at the piracy statistics, which just went up, and then say "We need more drm to help fix this." The problem gets worse from there.

no i meant "seriously?" as in "do we seriously need another stupid are you going to buy this game because it has drm thread"

i'm telling you, someone should just make an official thread and post there, that way those of you who care can know who isn't going to buy games with DRM.

Ehh, I'm with the people who say you should buy it and then pirate it if the DRM bothers you. But, then again, they'd probably just see that number as another copy stolen.

Regardless of what is actually true, publishers and devs see PC as a dying platform, mainly because of piracy. Honestly, piracy is absolutely out of control.

The survival of the PC Gaming platform - my anti-piracy.

I will not be buying Far Cry 2 because of this DRM. Sucks ass because I was really looking forward to this game. SecuROM doesn't bother me anywhere as much as the install limit (although, the only game I have with SecuROM is Star Wars: Battlefront 2). I already know about the 'refund system' or whatever it's called, but it's still BS. Sure, I have to uninstall Far Cry 2 before reformatting, but if this trend continues, I will have to uninstall every game on my hard drive (assuming that all of my games are 2008 and later). That could take hours.

Boo fucking hoo. So buy it on console.

Consoles are the worst form of DRM.

Also, some of us don't have consoles and can't afford one because they spent their money building or upgrading their PC to play these kick ass games. Also, there's some that don't like playing their first person shooters on a console (I fall into this category).

Anyone who wants to see a change should vote with their wallet and not buy the game. There are plenty of good games coming out this season that don't include SecuROM.

Just send a $50 check to the developers, then pirate. :p

The thread title was about as explicit as thread titles get. There was no ambiguity as to what the subject of this thread was going to be. So the truth of it is you're voluntarily and willingly stepping into a thread knowing exactly what the subject is, then proceeding to bitch about the fact that people are once again discussing the subject matter. If you really are sick of reading anti-DRM threads, don't read them. Obviously other members of the forum do want to discuss the subject, and so long as it's not disruptive to the forum in general (and this certainly is not), they are free to do so.

I will buy it when it hits the bargain bin simply because I have so much in my queue already. For the record, I have never had any issues with SecuROM, SafeDisc, or TAGES. Every time that I have needed activations refunded, I contacted the company and they politely and quickly reset my activations (Direct2Drive and Microsoft).

Interesting SecuROM customer service story from the FC2 forum...guy had a problem with a phantom DRM warning.

I bet the replacement .exe file is their own version of a cracked exe that bypasses the "virtual drive" check.

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/foru...821007696/m/9421008696

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My issue has been resolved. Here's the only thing that worked.

I ran the launch analysis utility (right click the far cry 2.exe file and select it)

Zipped the file using WinRar

Sent that zipped file to support@securom.com with the error message

They e-mailed me a link to download a replacement .EXE file

I replaced old far cry 2.exe with new one and it worked on the first try.

I know this sucks that you even have to do this, but at least SecuROM got back to me promptly. Ubisoft still hasn't responded to my e-mail.

I am now just a bit worried that I'll have to do this again once any update patch comes out.

Good luck to all. Hope this works for you. The game seems pretty damn beautiful so far. Haven't played much though.

I'd actually like to look at the exe. It would be hilarious if they just downloaded the crack off the net and then sent it to him. I've actually heard of that happening before with another game, can't remember which on off the top of my head though..

I agree that invasive anti-pirating measures dont actually stop pirates.
I also agree they just hurt honest consumers and (in the end) sales.

I will not buy this game or pirate it. The gameplay looks like more flash than substance and I will not support an industry with these virtues.

If the price comes down within 6 months and they release a new version or a patch that wipes out the DRM, I may consider it.

Why not just buy the game and install the no-dvd crack? It would be the same as buying a new honda and sticking a fart can muffler on the back... :)

We shouldn't have to download a potentially spyware/virus ridden crack just to have our game work.

You'll be the ones missing out on a killer game. I'm very impressed with it.
