Who will be the 'AMD' of video cards?

nVidia is the graphicZilla right now! Video card prices are on the rise! Which company will be the first to make a comback and force those prices down?

just ranting for no reason 🙂
i actually don't really care right now. Radeon DDR for 100 bucks sounds pretty good to me - but we need some dam win2k drivers!

nvidia is not the AMD. The AMD has faster speeds at lower prices. nVidia is entering Intel stage, fast speeds, high prices....hopefully "AMD" comes around soon.

nVidia WAS the AMD of video cards, and now has assumed the Intel spot of video cards. 3dfx was the Intel of video cards until it died (which Intel should be doing within the next 5 - 8 years).

ATi cannot be considered for either the AMD or Intel spot becuase of a few reasons. They are so massivly large compared to nVidia and 3dfx. ATi cards have never been the fastest but always of quality and quantity.

yeah, btw I *STILL* cannot find a Geforce based card for the price I got a Voodoo 3 last year.. which is why I'm looking to PowerVR for help! cmon.. Kyro 2 where are youu!

so far, the best hope for competition exists in ATi, with Matrox coming a distant 3rd, soon to be eclipsed I think by PowerVR (the makers of Kyros chips).

that is, in terms of 3D power/features.. It'd be nice if Matrox was running closer to the front of the pack (we haven't heard a squeak outa them for a while) though! gooo Canada!

$90 Canadian? or American?

I got mine for about $150 (including taxes). at todays exchange rate, that would be near $100 US.. I can't get a Geforce for that price up here at all...

amd of video?

has to be powerVR

evil kyro = k5 (too weak)

kyro2 will = k6-2 (day late and a dollar short)

but lets how the 3rd gen will be an athlon

<<nVidia IS THE AMD of video. ATI is the Intel. ??

Took the words right out of my mouth. 🙂

I guess he doesn't know that ATI has a much larger market share than NVidia. (for now)

Oooooooo, and didn't gates say that each x box was going to have 2 nVidia chips? See, going to creep up on ATI in volume if the x box takes off, just like amd creeping up on Intel.

ATI is not the intel of video cards. Get this. Intel and AMD processor are pretty much comparable in performance, and after the next round of cuts, intels will still be 50% more expensive for the most part. But the intels aren't any lower quality (in fact, lower defect rate), and both are good processors. Nvidia's on the other hand, suffer from bad drivers, bad 2d sharpness at high res. ALso they use retarded marketing campaigns touting currentlly useless features that will not be useful for 2 years (MMX was like that, SSE is like that, T&L is like that) Nvidia hyped up T&L so much it was horrible and they are nearly 2 generations past the initial t&l capable card. Remember that "The world is gonna change" thing they put on their site the week before the geforce256 came out. Just horrible. ATI at least has a better 2d and dvd decoding, and for the most part is cheaper and also doesnt hype up everything nearly to the extreme as nvidia, they say they have t&l but they aren't going out saying 85 games are coming out next week that will use it. Say what you will, but ATI is better, and more like AMD. either way though this isn't a very good comparison. If AMD gained another 40% market share then we could say ATI was like AMD.

<< I guess he doesn't know that ATI has a much larger market share than NVidia. (for now) >>

IIRC that is not true anymore...NVidia is now comparable to ATI in market share AFAIK, although I have not seen any really recent articles comparing their market shares, so ATI may have taken the lead again.

Here is a (slightly dated, it's from Nov 2000) Link that comments on NVidia overtaking ATI as the top graphic processor manufacturer.

nVidia is definitely the AMD of video cards. 3dfx was the Intel, there's no question about it. Anyone claiming otherwise isn't looking back far enough. Look here:
1. 3dfx made the first decent consumer-level 3D accelerator (SST1 - Voodoo Graphics), Intel made the first popular x86 microprocessor (8088). Both of these products were commercially very successful.
2. 3dfx created propietary API for their video cards. Intel created 32bit X86-extensions (IA-32, 386), MMX and SSE.
3. With Riva128 nVidia seemingly came out of nowhere challenging 3dfx's best (SST1). AMD had the world's fastest microprocessor in their hands when they launched K6-233. Both of these products lacked on some areas compared to competition - SST1 had better image quality than Riva128 and Pentium had better FPU than K6.
4. nVidia and AMD got beaten by 3dfx and Intel with the next product generation. Voodoo2 smoked Riva128 and Riva128ZX, Pentium II destroyed the K6 and K6/2 in terms of floating-point performance and clock speed.
5. nVidia came out with TNT series which was better than Voodoo2 in most areas. AMD came out with Athlon, which was to P3 what TNT was to Voodoo2.
6. Latest nVidia generation (GeForce-line) certainly is to 3dfx's latest line (Voodoo5) what Athlon Tbird is to Intel P3 coppermine. Faster all around and of much more advanced architecture.

Only difference is that in video card market everything is happening much quicker, and there's more contenders on the field. For now, Intel can afford to be the lazy king of the hill, whereas 3dfx fell for that very reason.

Postponed release of NV20 is a sign that nVidia is having some problems. As is AMD - they haven't been able to release more advanced variations of Athlon core and SMP-capable chipsets in a timely manner.

I am gonna be the next AMD!!

I'll take nVidia cards and stick AMD chips in em! 1.2ghz chip in it and half the price of the NV20, MUHAHAHA.

uh jprod. the riva128 flat out sucked compared to the voodoo1. Also the k6-233 was actually a complete failure, and almost bankrupted AMD. the k6-233 was in short supply for almost half a year, earning AMD a horrible reputation that they didnt shake until the k6-2 came out. The 7 quarters in a row of losses, not surprisingly was during this almost going bankrupt time frame. 3dfx wasn't intel for long. They lost it basically at the voodoo3 stage, and the tables were turned. Once the v3 came out, and 3dfx started making their own cards, nvidia had a larger market share than 3dfx. Also you really cant compare nvidia and 3dfx as they are totally different companies, nvidia grew very large not because of their high end products but because they had a huge line of low end chips to be used in other systems, whereas 3dfx did not. This is also the same reason that ati is big. nvidia and ati still make rage2, rage pro , and riva128zx and tnt vantas and this is the reason why. Intel and AMD generally cater to the same market, where nvidia and 3dfx did not, 3dfx is practically a cyrix in this respect, with a non broad product line.

i don't think AMD shook off that bad image until the athlon really, the k6-2/super 7 boards were plagued in the begining with horrible compatiblity problems (me and jumping the gun and buying a first revision MVP3 board 🙁).

back to this issue, i will have to agree, bitboys is the AMD of the video world.. they're coming out to shock us all !! 🙂

<< i actually don't really care right now. Radeon DDR for 100 bucks sounds pretty good to me - but we need some dam win2k drivers! >>

The new 2K drivers are VERY good.

I don't think it's possible to make a comparison between the MPU market and Video Card market with regard to Intel/AMD and Nvidia/ATI. Neither Nvidia or ATI is even close to owning 80% of the total market. In fact they have relatively simular marketshare, with Nvidia eroding more and more of ATI's share.
Becuase none of them are dominating, I don't expect any of these companies to discount their products like AMD does against Intel. A pricewar would be expected though. Rather the price difference of the cards from these companies will likely be from the performance and feature set difference.

Thats their problem though, how can they expect to dominate a market with prices that mainstream consumers can't afford? They are proverbially shooting themselves in the foot with the prices being as high as they are.

Hans007: How does NVidia suffer from bad drivers? They have better drivers than anyone else. Please give me an example of a serious NVidia driver problem.
