Who wears a shirt underneath their white dress shirt?

I wear a white T-shirt under my dress shirts except in the summer. On 30+ C days, I say screw it and even leave the top 2 buttons undone when outside cause I'm melting.

I don't unless I really want to look nice. I know I'm supposed to, but it's uncomfortable...can't stand any kind of layers. And my dress shirts are thick enough that you can't really tell if I am or not anyway.

But when I know I have to look my best, I'll suck it up and wear a very thin one.

I agree. I don't want to wear a shirt under my shirt. I don't want to wear pants under my pants either, so I wear briefs not boxers.

If you are wearing a jacket, then an undershirt is okay since you cannot see it and you don't want to sweat on your nice shirt. If you are just wearing a dress shirt, an undershirt looks horrible. It basically shows that you have a cheap shirt that you can see through, so you need an undershirt on to hide that fact. Get a quality shirt and you won't need an undershirt, unless you sweat abnormally due to obesity or some other reason.

Dress for success.

The problem with see through shirts is with white and other light colored shirts. Why do they make them see-through anyway? Most of the shirts sold are thin.

Stop buying cheap shirts. 100% cotton isn't see through generally...at least not the ones I buy.

Stopy buying cheap shirts. You shouldn't be able to see through them.

I concur that thin shirts should be avoided 'cause they look bad either way (with or without undershirt) sans jacket. If choosing to wear an undershirt for whatever reason, I would avoid T-shirts as they generally are too thick and high-collared and thus look silly when the shirt is not fully buttoned (i.e. sans tie). Instead, I prefer lower-cut round collars. V-necks would be weird if hairy.

I do. I hate the fact that if I don't my brown skin shows through the the white shirt and it doesn't look as white anymore. I have no problems with colored shirts though. On the other hand I don't like seeing the t-shirt sleeves or collar underneath. So what's the trend these days: t-shirt or no t-shirt? I think those v-neck t-shirts makes the look worst.

A better question would be who doesn't wear an undershirt with a dress shirt? Besides douchey Lee Hotti types.

Present. Because it isn't needed and is uncomfortable. With a nice dress shirt there just isn't any reason to do so. If you sweat that much then see a doctor or use better anti-persperant or lose some weight.

And I've worn a suit for some 12 years now. If you can see through the shirt, then you're buying cheap shirts.

You're mentioning a t-shirt? The proper term is an undershirt - a thin v-neck undershirt or one without sleves.

Yeah, because it has to do with just losing weight or the doctor...

For you, it's uncomfortable, for me, it's far more comfortable. As far as buying cheap shirts, I buy Brooks Brothers shirts, both their regular lines and a few Golden Fleece, I can see my t-shirt through both and they definitely aren't "cheap shirts".

You can call it whatever you want, t-shirt, undershirt, whatever. I won't be wearing a wife-beater anytime soon. I look fine and work in an environment where I have never been called out on wearing a shirt, despite it showing from my dress shirts.

Sounds like you're a bit too judgmental.

I can't stand it when I can see someone's wife-beater underneath their dress shirt. Looks completely tacky to me. That said, I do wear t-shirts under all of my shirts. It's comfortable and I don't have to worry about sweat stains on my outer shirt.

I wear a white t-shirt under only the shirts I go to work in. Also wear them under sweaters and long sleeves. I do not wear a white t-shirt under my other t-shirts, however.

I usually don't, but then again my dress shirts are all thick enough and are usually 100% pima cotton so that you can't see through them anyways.

I'd like to address the issue of shirts being too thin. A lot of people saying that only cheap shirts are "thin", and by that I mean you could potentially see the undershirt beneath it.

For true dress shirts, shirts that you'd wear with a suit, this is true; however, sport shirts, shirts that are more business casual, are thin enough that you could probably see the undershirt if the shirt itself is light in color (darker shirts don't have the problem). For these shirts, it's not a matter of quality. The fabric is light for a reason. I wear them during the summer, and I'd sweat like a pig if the shirts didn't breathe a little.

So, I pretty much wear an undershirt under all my shirts. I do it for comfort.
