I think Obama's a social nationalist because

he supports high tariffs
he supports national health care
he supports heavy bureaucracy that regulates the fuck out of everything.
he thinks we need national infrastructure irrespective of what the people think.
he supports neoconservative foreign intervention which helps the elite out.
he supports a strong central bank and a weak national currency.

However, Gov. Romney was an even greater social nationalist than President Obama is. Bush was a social nationalist in ways different than Obama was.

I guess one could say that Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and the Rockefeller Republican George HW Bush were social democrats, but I believe that Reagan, Bush 43, and Obama are not. Newt Gingrich is very heavily democratic, but Santorum is not.

The first socially progressive Democratic President would probably be Woodrow Wilson; the first Republican would be Theodore Roosevelt.
