Who was more innovative?

Jimi Hendrix /w The Experience and Band of Gypsies collectively changed music forever in an extraordinarily short period of time. PF were very innovative as well but given the small timeline that Hendrix was alive and creating music I would say the hat tip goes to him on this one.

Most telling is that, back in the day, NO ONE, not even Eric Clapton, ever wanted to have to follow Mr. Jimmy on stage.

His own peers not only respected him they were in awe of him. What more can you say?

Edit: But, hell, I'd be the last person to deny Pink Floyd their major, major props. It would be like dissing Newton to praise Einstein.

Hard to say- they pioneered different areas. It's like saying "Who's a better musician, Stevie Wonder or Liberace?"

hendrix has been copied 100x over since his time
PF? hardly.

of course, I don't know how things were 'back then', so I can't decide who was more innovative 'back then'

i was on my way up to michigan and was listening to "the hendrix experience" i think was the title of the show, on NPR all about jimi... it was a great and informative show... i believe one of the reasons they said he was so much more innovative was when he came to the U.S. and discovered 8track recording... compared to 4track across the pond... it gave him more abilitiy to add more tracks....

Hendrix.

Very unconventional in how he strung his guitar.
Very innovative in his "showmanship" (ie, playing with his teeth, behind his back)
Plus he could really really really play.

He changed the game. Miles Davis credited him with the innovation behind Bitches Brew, which created a whole new sub-genre of jazz, jazz fusion.

Innovative?

Hmm... I think they were both ahead of their times.

I think I have to give Floyd the nod for being innovative in a broader spectrum.

What if they were not ahead of their time, but rather, they came out in the perfect era, an era where drugs were everywhere, and people used them to open up their mind... and that is how they came to be so innovative?

Those were all old bluesmen tricks. I'd say he was the most innovative of the 2 though.

He pioneered the use of distortion, and electronic effects.

Well said.

He also made it "big" when the whole "white/black" thing wasn't really resolved yet. He had it much harder than a white man would with Jimi's talent. He couldn't play at clubs as easier (if they even let him in), it was much hard to gather a fan base when you were black in that time unless you were playing the famous 'Chitlin Circuit', etc. Thank god he did what he did though. He changed music forever in a matter of a couple of years.

That's because NOBODY dare to copy PF, and NOBODY could do any decent jobs in trying to copy PF. That's why, it's that awesome.

Hendrix played the guitar like no one before him, and hardly anyone after. For that, IMO it goes to him. Floyd is awesome, but synth+12-string sound would have been discovered eventually.
