For the past few days, security-app maker Lookout (who you may remember for their App Genome Project) has been warning folks about a new AndVirus (yeah, just made that up) they’ve found called Geinimi. Word on the street is that this bad boy steals user data, and shows signs of "botnet-like capabilities." Scary stuff, indeed. At the moment, it looks like the virus is only being distributed in China via third-party app stores and has yet to make it into the official Android Market.

Been telling people they need to pay more attention to the permissions of apps they download to their phone and what they do with the personal data. At first glance, it seems like there's not much you could do with a botnet of phones. Then as you think about it more, it starts to sink in. You have a small device with gobs of internal storage, sound recording abilities, video(HD?) recording abilities, GPS, financial account information, and exponentially increasing processing power. Beyond the simple stealing of financial and personal information, GPS tracking of the individual carrying the phone, and recording sound/video, I'm sure there's many things that more nefarious minded people could come up with.
