I used to run a BBS from my bedroom on a Commodore64 back in the mid 80's... Only one user at a time could be online, I "upgraded" to a 1200 baud modem for better performance and I had 2 (count 'em 2) 5 1/4" external floppy drives to store all my data..... Ahh those were the days.... :)

I didn't start using BBS's until the early 90's. Used to have a lot of fun calling several local ones daily. Used my old 286 with a 2400bps modem. Downloaded 1KB every 4 seconds!

1st computer was a CoCo with 16K of memory, then upgraded to 32K. Cartridges, regular tv's for monitors, tape drives to load programs and a 300baud Volksmodem. I remember those days very well.

I used to live in Arroyo Grande in the mid 90's and frequented a few BBS's in the area. Lets see, there was 4th Dimension for a while.. Holodeck.. The Shop.. Elite Services or something.. Chthonic.. that's all I can remember.

Ah the memories, telnet BBS's just aren't the same.

I'm taking pre-telnet BBS's. There was no real network. You dialed into my computer and everyone else got a busy signal until you logged off...

My first BSB I ran was on a Commie 64, with a 300 baud modem. The shiznit was being able to make colored ascii animation. The Amiga was king back then. I upgraded to a 1200 baud modem, then finally spent $4000 on a 286 with a 120 MEG hard drive. MEG. The hard drive alone was $2000. For 120 MEGS.

ouch. I was young and had too much money.

But we had fun!

I started in '83 (I was 13 years old in 1983). 300 baud modem, pick up the phone, dial the number, wait for the carrier tone, unplug the handset and plug it into the modem.... Damn I'm old....
