Just reading the first post here got me wondering:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2219483

RMB to go forward? Thats a new one... How many others have a weird setup like this?

Im an arrow keys user and although im vastly outnumbered by the wasd peeps arrow key users arent that uncommon.

Anyone use those numpad arrows to move about? Just noticed they existed :p

Not exactly unusual but I use Nostromo N52 + Logitech G9 mouse for gaming.

I will never play any PC game without this setup (not only because I don't want to, but because I won't be able to anymore :)).

The game doesn't allow us to rebind keys? No problem, I'll rebind my N52 keys to get it work the way I wanted.

I used RMB to go forward since the DOOM II days. It's a throwback to before there were "alt fires". People stick with configurations they know because of the twitch memory.

Due to all the added things you can do in FPS these days, RMB for going forward doesn't work as well as it used to (IMO) so I changed, it took some retraining to go to the wasd full time.

IJKL instead of WASD. I find it superior because when using WASD, you have have to deal with Shift, Tab and Caps Lock taking up needless space, the Caps Lock key being useless in most games, and the Tab key sometimes being reserved. IJKL on the other hand is surrounded entirely by normal sized and functioning keys so you can bind as many things as you need without reaching all over the keyboard.

I use default, which is usually WSAD. I will change stuff to WSAD if it isn't for some reason though. I just find it much easier to go with the standard control setups now. I use to do my own custom setups but stopped because I'd spend like 10 minutes remapping half the keys for a game and after doing it for a lot of games it got old, fast. Also makes it easier when going over to someone else's house and playing on their system and also some games that give you on screen prompts to press something or whatever wont show the key that you rebound it too and instead show their default key still.

Being left-handed and using a left-handed mouse, I always map WASD to the arrow keys and, similar to what motsm indicates, this facilitates using the keys in the immediate vicinity for any additional functions, depending on the game.

wasd, NO inverted mouse. It drives me crazy when I play on someone's computer/console and they have inverted controls.

There was a big thread on this a while back. I am standard all the way.

I use LMB forward, RMB backwards. CTRL and shift for primary and secondary fire. <> for strafe. and so on as needed....I have used this since quake DM and original team fortress. I tried to convert to WASD and I just can't do it.

Back in my Quake TF1 days I used to use RMB - Forward, S - Back , A - Strafe left, D - Strafe right, Spacebar - Grenade1, Ctrl - Jump, Alt - Grenade 2, M1 - Fire, Left shift - Zoom.

Circle strafing was such a bitch with that setup.

Now I use the traditional WASD setup and occasionally use RMB for forward depending the game.

Back in CS Beta, I used to use the arrow keys as I never even 'knew' about WASD. It became a problem in DoD when I needed to spring and prone and had to use the numpad for that (quite a pinky stretch). Soon after, WASD I went.

so you can't fire and walk at the same time?

My ring finger sits on w and my middle finger on s most of the time. My hand sits slanted with pinky on q, ring on w, middle on s, pointer on e or d and thumb on spacer bar.

It's hard to remember what my hand actually does. After 15 years of using this config for fps it just does it on its own. :D

FFXI had a keyboard only setting using the numpad for moving and most of it's menu options. It kept the keyboard free for (one handed) typing messages while you were still able to move around.

depends on the game.. and what keys i use the most.

I use a G13 in lue with a G19.

The G13 gets used more for general left hand key operation which is entirely customizable, so sometimes i'll have ctrl where shift should be and vice versa.

I used to do custom setups probably based on the old Doom config until Counter-Strike. It mainly had to do around having roommates and spending time reconfiguring every time I played. I was the last non wasd holdout, so it was easier for me to change than them...even though it was my PC. In general the only thing I change these days is maybe making the "use" key E instead of F.

WASD makes my left hand hurt and it's hard to find the keys again without having to look down at the keyboard if I had to press a different button on the other side of the keyboard.

I put my 4 fingers on A-S-D-F and Rt hand on Mouse.

RMB=Forward
LMB=Primary Fire
M3=Alt Fire

A=Back
S=Strafe Left
D=Strafe Right
F=Use/Pick Up
Lt Shift=Walk/Sprint
Spacebar=Jump

I use my index fingerfor some of the other options:
R=Reload
G=Gernade
V=Team Commangs/Voice Chat

Z=Crouch

Q, W, E = Whatever else

Works well, but It's hard to crouch and back off (have to shift fingers to get it). Easy to return fingers to position by the bump on the F key.

How do you walk forward while aiming down sites and firing?

E - Forward
D - Backward
S - Strafe Left
F - Strafe Right
A - activate stuff
Space - Jump
C - Crouch
Z - Drop items
X - Prone
R - Reload (standard)
W - I've started to use this to activate things, depends
G - Grenades

I've been doing it like this since doom or quake or whatever, so I never even knew that WSDA was the standard way of doing it..

It does kinda suck cause I have to reconfigure every freaking new game.

I did the nostromo thing for a while, I might go back to htat, it was pretty good, but the keys on it sometimes stuck a bit.

Aiming Down Sites=Zoom?

Zoom is usually the Mouse Wheel button.
Come to think of it, I don't know if I can Zoom in and Fire at the same time... Never really noticed.

Seems like on some past games M3 (on the thumb side of the mouse) is my zoom. No Alt Fire on weapons?

I use T (forward), G (backward), R (strafe left), F (strafe right).. I haven't seen anyone else that uses a square block of keys for movement, maybe I'll find someone in this thread :)

Mouse - invert, mouse 1 fire, mouse 2 jump.

Why would you not use the numpad instead? That way you get a whole bunch of other keys around the movement ones.
