Who use a Pentium 4 in his main pc?

well I still use P4 3.4GHz HT on my secondary PC but I am looking for a replacement. Considering the mobo is an Asus P5AD2-E Premium... my choices are rather limited. 🙁

Well, I use a single-core 2GHz Pentium-M laptop as my main machine. I also still have a P3-800 that I use regularly, mostly through Remote Desktop.

My laptop still does fine for almost everything, but I'm building a new desktop for gaming/HTPC. I will probably still spend most of my time on the laptop and use the new machine as my secondary, "entertainment" box.

I just upgraded from the same mobo and Rdram that has a 3.06 HT P4 on it. I'm still going to rebuild it because it still runs flawlessly when I find a cheap case for it. It's just that Rdram is now hard to get and still expensive. But I had the same install of WinXP for 5 years on it since it was so stable.

While I do a lot of browsing, I also do a little video encoding and minor gaming (CoD/CoD2 AoE2/AoE3) and I am about ready for something new, particularly when I'm doing far to much all at the same time.

The p4 HT 630 'prescott' 90nm runs slightly cooler at 84W than the p4 631 'cedar mill' 65nm at 86W, so no real improvement in performance in the 'shrink' of the p4 HT.

P4 HT 630 3.0, i915G/ICH6, 2gb DDR2-667 4-4-4-11, with a Diamond Radeon S9250 256mb videocard.

Maybe I'll upgrade to Conroe or Wolfdale (or Kentsfield or Yorkfield) when the Nehalems come out. There's some pretty sweet hardware out there!

Prescott 2.8GHz with HT, 1GB DDR2, GMA900, a Dell w/o PCIe or AGP. I only play DoTA ( warcraft 3 mod) but thats because I can't play any other games. Definitely upgrading next year ( might actually go as far as getting a Precision workstation with Dual Xeon processors and 16GB RAM as video editing on this rig is definitely too slow).

Yeah, true, it does run very well and the RDram is expensive. Too bad. I have found some but unless the give it away, not going to bother. I built a machine ( was mine ) for my brother a while back that has Rambus on it and still works like a charm. Good for them too as I told them the next upgrade they get will not consist of that ram. They said huh?🙂

Yes I thought about giving mine to my brothers but since I used pc1066 184 pin rdram, it is very difficult to find much less buy. Most of the stuff I see on ebay or here is pc800. I do kind of miss going in there and overclocking with the dip switches instead of the bios...good times.
And yeah I mention rdram and they wouldn't know it if it jumped up and smacked them in face. :laugh:

I remember upgrading my coppermine 700 to 784 with the dip switches...I was so proud of myself... Fortunately, I completely skipped p4. I went from the coppermine to a tbird, athlon xp, athlon 64, opteron 180, to a c2d. I guess I just instinctively knew that netburst was a turd in shiny clothes!

yeah, I remember setting the dips too using a small flat tiped screwdriver. Now I just leave them alone as I have to put my x2 reading glasses on just to see the damn little thingys. 😀

My main machine is a P4 2.4 with 1GB ram, Dell Dimension 4500 with a radeon 9700 pro card. Ever since getting my wife a C2D 2.4 iMac I am dying to get a new machine. I have my eye on a refurb Dell Inspiron 530 with a 2.4 Quad 6600, adding my own videocard later on. The C2D does a good job rendering AVCHD camcorder footage but i would love to have a Quad processor system to do that.

I do but not for much longer, new rig build in progress. Been using my rig for 5 years and recently ran into programs that refuse to run on my machine. Have been living with "slowness" for a few years. Actually, still a great machine for basic tasks 🙂 however new machine with E8500 will be night and day...

I am! I'm waiting for Core i7 before I start building. Why in the world would you buy an obsolete socket with old technology? You should always get the latest, IMO. And to all you who are saying it will cost tons of money for Nehalem where do you come up with that? It will be similar to buying a quadcore today. BTW, what is the latest known release date for Core i7? Some say September, most say October, and X-bit Labs says November.

My rig is a Dell P4 2.8GHz ( prescott) w/ GMA 900 and without an AGP or PCIe slot. I only play Dota and other old games on a 15" 1024*768 monitor ( only because I can't play newer ones), so yeah.. not much of an issue. Will upgrade to Nehalem around January when I have the time to build my own. Hello SLI/CF/Lucid, HD gaming, 8 core ( for video work), Blu-Ray, 7.1 audio.....

@WaitingForNehalem: I don't think Nehalem will be out as early as Sept due to lack of competition, mid/late October or even November sounds more like Intel...

another "used to" person.
got a 3ghz p4 w/ HT to go to college with in fall 2004. it was a dell 8400. i'm actually using it to type this post since i'm back at home and my rig (below) is at school more than half the continent away.

built my very first computer in summer 2007, a e4300 (see sig)

built my parents a computer a month or so ago, based around a e8400 (yes, my parents are running a faster computer than me...but then again their last computer lasted them 7 years, so this one will have to last too! now my mom and dad can check their email with blazing speeds and 8800GT assisted graphics! couldn't resist that card, since it was like $70 after rebate...not much more than budget graphics cards)
