Who thinks Netflix Throttles?

Yes, they throttle. They freely admit it, there is no secrecy.

I use Netflix, and I have absolutely no problems with that.

BTW there is no way in hell Netflix is paying full USPS rates on their DVD shipments. They actually have a pretty sweet deal going, their stuff bypasses normal handling.

Example

Additionally, even if they did pay full postage you cannot count that as their full cost. They probably start losing money well under 25 a month.

I average less than 25 a month yet they throttle me. I know plenty of people who are being throttle with less than 25 a month. I am more of 20 a month.
25 is the point where they lose money on just the postage. Add the labor costs to pack/ship and unpack/file, plus the costs of the discs and they are probably losing money on your 20 a month.

How many do they expect people to rent a week, just 3 DVDs week?
They expect to lose money on some accounts and make money on others.

Many people working full time do only watch 1-3 movies a week and use netflix for the convenience, lack of late fees, and selection of movies. These low-use people get first pick of the new releases since Netflix makes money off of them.

I wasn't renting new releases. I was renting Anime. All of the anime they had.

You actually have the time to watch all of the anime they have?

I'm another Anime user from Netflix (and the OP), and I was renting (or trying to rent) Neon Genisis Evangelion (spelling?), lets see, thats 8 discs, plus the two movies, so thats what? 10 discs?

It was taking them WAY too long to get them too me. I just wanted to get through the dam series, watch the two movies and be done with it. I'm impatient (spelling?), and HATE wating for sh!t, especially sh!t that comes in the mail.

It probably would have taken me a good month to get through all those Evangelion dvd's. Especally if they don't even ship you your Queue in order!?!? They shipped me like #7 in the Queue, instead of the order that I told them to ship it in. I wanted to watch the series first, then the first movie, then the second movie, and thats the order I had it in the queue. (since thats the way to watch the series, or so I'm told).

They throttle me, but I don't mind. I get a few movies, they hang around for a week (I'm usually too busy to watch), then I remember them, rip them to my HD, and mail them back. It's about another week before I can actually watch and delete the ripped movie, and by then I've already gotten some more disks. As long as throttling me allows them to stay in business, I'm all for it.

Blockbuster does the same thing. Good Luck.

Blockbuster even says they do.......it was in their Super Bowl ad. It was in their disclaimers scroll at the bottom of the ad. Said certain customers will experience delays in movie shipments. Cannot imagine Netflix not doing the same thing.

Got pissed off at Netflix so I quit with them. Went to Blockbuster Online. Now I'll have to see how they go (as some of you know).

So I'm making these three polls. Do you use Netflix? Do you think they throttle? If they do (and I think they do), would you still keep them?

Throttle-Netflix purposly holding back dvd's or taking a LONG time to get them to you or you sending them back.

Apparently you have to get 12+ movies a month before they start it. I've heard that Netflix "purposly" ships it from Hawaii?

BTW, I'm pretty sure that Netflix SAID they throttle the movies THEMSELVES. They publically admitted it I think.

i go through a lot of movies a month and they don't throttle me. in fact, i even get movies that say "short wait" next day. i also have a delivery center 2 town away tho.

edit: apparently what i thought was a lot isn't. i'm not ripping to my hdd either tho. i probably get 12 or so in a month if i'm watching a couple a day, less if i'm busy.

I only watch maybe 2 a week via Blockbuster, but its cheaper than buying the DVD and only watching it once, and more convienient that going to the store.

EDIT***Oh snap, thought you were talking about ISP😛***

Zip.ca (the rogers one) is even fvcking worst than Netflix.

i don't expect them to lose money so i'm ok.
plus i know the shens of blockbuster. any reforms they've made were to catch up with netflix. so netflix it is.

At my job I could watch 2-3 movies a night. I work 14 days a week, so thats 28-42 movies + movies I could watch at home

Kinda a bummer that they throttle 😛

I predict in a month you'll have a thread that says "continuing hatred of Blockbuster".

Only reason I use Blockbuster is because they give you a coupon for a free movie every week (or twice a month)..which is good if you have a specific movie in mind and want to pick it up.

Even if they do throttle, I think Netflix is a good value for the price. I don't love NF and don't have stock or anything, but I've been vary pleased with the service. I can kinda see it being dirty pool that they don't disclose if they throttle, but I've never had any gripe with getting all the stuff I can watch. That said, I have a job that keeps me from spending too much time in front of TV. I hardly ever go through 12 DVDs in a month. When I have been on a roll, I've topped out at something like 20, but never seen a delay. A coworker of mine probably goes through 20 per month, or more, and has never mentioned throttling.

To be fair, though, I've been jacked around by Blockbuster so much that Netflix could probably randomly have goons come beat me up and I'd still prefer them to BB. I got NF when BB rentals went over $6.50 in my area; I have the 3 DVD plan from Netflix and even if they throttle me at 4 DVDs a month, it would be a better deal than I was getting in the retail rentla channel.

They do it. It says they do on their customer agreement.

Allocation, Delivery and Return of Rented DVDs

We reserve the right to allocate and ship DVDs among our subscribers in any manner that we, in our sole and absolute discretion, determine. In addition, we will, in our sole and absolute discretion, determine the quantity of DVDs we purchase for any particular title and the level of staffing and number of shipments to be processed at each distribution center. As a result, we may not always send you the top choices from your queue, and we may not ship out your next DVD on the same day that we receive one from you. At present, our goal is to ship you the DVDs listed highest in your queue. Also, we currently try to ship you DVDs from the distribution center closest to you so that you get movies quickly. Often, on the same day that we receive a DVD from you, we will ship the next available DVD from your queue. In certain instances, your next available DVD will not ship until at least one business day following our receipt of your returned movie. This can occur, for example, when your top choices are not available to you from your closest distribution center or the number of shipments to be processed by the distribution center on that day has been exceeded. When this happens, your DVD will likely ship on the next business day and may come from an alternate distribution center.

In determining priority for shipping and inventory allocation, we give priority to those members who receive the fewest DVDs through our service. As a result, those subscribers who receive the most movies may experience that (i) the shipment of their next available DVD occurs at least one business day following return of their previously viewed movie, (ii) delivery takes longer, as the shipments may not be processed from their local distribution center and (iii) they receive movies lower in their queue more often than our other subscribers. Other factors that may affect delivery times, include, but are not limited to, (i) the distance between the distribution center from which your DVD was shipped and your delivery address, (ii) the timing of your placement or adjustment of movies in your queue and (iii) circumstances impacting delivery by the U.S. Postal Service.

We do not process returns or deliveries on Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays. We make no guaranty as to the shipping and delivery of DVDs and may, in our sole and absolute discretion, change our business practice regarding allocation, delivery and shipping, without notice. We may from time to time revise these Terms of Use but we will not necessarily provide you notice of the revisions. It is up to you to review the Terms of Use frequently to determine if there have been changes.

We will send you an e-mail letting you know when we have received a returned movie, and we will also send you another e-mail letting you know when we have shipped your next DVD, including the anticipated time of delivery.

The bottom line is Blockbuster will do the same same thing. Clearly, if you are going through 6 movies a week, you are _probably_ doing something illegal. Netflix knows this. Netflix knows that they are a business and dumping unprofitable customers is a sound business move, so your bitching will fall on deaf ears.

over all the policy seems pretty fair to me.

not the poster i'm quoting, but everyone else that b1tches constantly about throttling.

get over it already.

fact is, other people are paying too, why should they not get priority over you dvd gluttons or dvd copiers?

I only pay for 1 movie out at a time, so I get 1 per week. I've tried sending back the movie quicker to get more than 1 per week, but they always find a way to make it not get here. Oh well, you get what you pay for.

I've looked over my rental activity over the past 3 years and see no difference between then and now. I still get about 8 to 12 DVDs a month ( 3-at-a-time ), which is still profitable for them. I rarely rent movies, only series as I can watch all the movies I want either at work or on DishHD. I am more worried about getting on their ****** list since the post office loses a disc every month or two.

What the? Even two weeks ago we knew they throttle. I realize someone bumped this thread from 2/6 but even then it was a dumb question. It would be like asking who thinks mcdonalds sells hamburgers.

We need a poll option that says "Netflix throttles, but I don't care you whiny little pissant".

Back in the old days if we wanted to pirate a movie... we did it the old-fashioned way-- we bought it!

What does pirating have to do with anything? It really isn't hard to watch 1 movie a day.
