That's strange. I have both Reader & Professional on the PC I'm using right now... Reader takes quite a while to start, especially when started from within a browser, but it is also takes a while when it's just opening a file.

Professional, however, opens them instantly. I haven't experienced any delays at all using it.

I never said I hate it. The reader works ok, the professional version is better. The latter is required for work. Never really had much of an issue and when there is Adobe support has been good. Of course you have to actually buy software to be able to call support. ;)

Odd that it runs faster. I'll have to give it a try! (Just bought CS2 Premium which I think comes with it). :)

And Acrobat also doesn't use virtual window in memory caching of windows. WTF kind of lame programmer made that decision?

I don't know why Adobe is doing this. It's like they want to kill the pdf format (which is completely awesome if not for the POS Acrobat Reader)

Acrobat Reader is the devil.

We have these new printers at work tagged with brand new computers(either P4 3.0's w/1Gig of Ram with Microsoft Windows 2KProfessional or Pentium M 1.86 w/1Gig of RAM and 2K Pro) with Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 running on top of that and I swear to God it still takes me forever and a day to print out a 9 page peer reviewed research article. If only I could convince the system admins to switch to FoxIt

I just installed Foxit and it seems to work pretty well. I agree that Acrobat 7 is bloatware but I have a fast computer with plenty of RAM so I can live with it if I have too.

Download FoxIT reader and stop being "that guy"

Why re-invent the wheel?

When the first guy's wheel is actually a pentagon and has an off center axle, it's probably worth re-inventing.

Just installed FoxIt. Thanks!

And I have Pro 6 on this laptop. Still sucks. Just not as bad as the reader.

Just as an aside... I wasn't trying to extoll the virtues of or evangelize FoxIt. Hell, I don't even use it... but if you guys like it .

I was just trying to point out that Adobe fails @ life when it comes to their own software, which is sad. And to make the point, I was trying to find out exactly why Acrobat was handling such simple files with issues on computers that normally have no problems handling such items.

I think checking "print as image" might actually help the OP.

I remember a few years back when designing a document management system that Reader would take FOREVER to spool and print documents, only on certain machines.

It turns out there is some known issue using Reader to printer to a PCL-only (or maybe it PS?) printer-- we had the same symptoms the OP was having: long, long print times, large spool file sizes, etc.

The solution from Adobe was to check the "print as image" box-- it seemed to work for us as a stop gap.

Are you printing using the PCL5e/6 drivers? Have you tried printing with the PS driver instead?

Yup, that reduced print times to aobut 30 seconds and 27meg per page. But the thing is, why is this happening on certain PDFs. And why is it so excessive? It's not the point to have a STOP GAP. The point is the software is crappy.
