Weirded me out the first tiem i saw anyone do that, then when i saw pickeld watermelon rinds for sale that really weirded me out..who the hell eats that! 😕

I do! They're actually really good.....kinda like regular pickles, but crisper. I even have an old family recipie I could post if anyone's interested. 🙂

EDIT- as I suspected...your profile reveals that you are not a southerner. 😉

Wouldnt mind seeing that

No problem, I'll dig it up once I'm home. It takes three days to make, but they come out great. We opened a few jars of them at thanksgiving this year (you know how north carolinians are about garnishing everything with pickles 😉 )

When I was working as a manager for a big grocery store chain I got used to haveing umm southerners ask for all kinds of stuff like that. I usually tried to see if i could order it for them. Pickled watermelon rind. Old grannies asking for chewing tabacco. Not that shredded stuff but liek small squares that looked liek brownies. I used to talk to them and they said they greew up on that stuff out in georgia alabama carolina and stuff. We always had to order extra greens and chitterlings when they went on sale too. i have never tried any of that but i always wondered what it tastes like.

My uncle once when he was out here cut some cactus, the tender small one, we had and cleaned the spikes off and ate with with lemon and salt. i tried it ..wasnt too bad.

I am not a chef but I was under the impression that a little bit of salt can draw the flavor out of just about anything. Personally, I'd rather dip the watermellon in pure sugar!

I put salt on every melon that I eat. I don't like melons very much Especially watermelon so I don't eat them much, but when I do it must have salt.

I've put salt on other melons (notably cantaloupe and honeydew) so it's not that surprisng.

I recently was introduced to the cucumber with salt and lime (and a little habanero, too) and it really is good.

Im guessing salt would speed up the hurl process.

Luckily I have never tasted ass so I can't comment. But this topic should be reserved for the summer.

brxndxn, if your GF from the south? Seems like it is a southern thing, but I could be wrong. When I lived up north I never heard of such a thing.

I don't know if this is just a Mexican thing, but all of my Mexican friends put salt on all the fruit they eat - particularly mangos. Oh, and cucumber too... that one I'm addicted to. Salt, cucumber, and lemon... mmm!

Peace,

You should try the stands in downtown la near the fashion district. They let you put all sorts of stuff in the various fruits that they have there.

I always thought salt and watermelon was an weird thing too, until some of my Hispanic buddies did the same thing. When I was kid, my parents said try it and it wasn't too bad.

"So, is it normal to put salt on watermelon? I mean - yuck!"

I am from the South and we did it when we were little because we saw the adults do it. It tastes fine, but I don't do it anymore. I may try it again since you mentioned it.

Really, anything fried tastes good with ketchup.

My most recent surprising food combination was apples dipped in melted cheese.
