i've seen this happen in TV and hollywood movies way too many times, and it's a pet peeve of mine but enough for me to post about it now because i've seen two movies that happened in the same day (i watched casino royale and spiderman 3)

If I have luggage in the trunk, I let him help me get it out before paying him normally. I haven't ran into trouble with a cab driver, yet.

uhh.....i live in nyc and i get out and pay from time to time....usually when there are 4 or 5 ppl....
