Who started this whole "bro hug" thing?

NFS4

No Lifer
I've noticed that more and more males seem to resort to the "bro hug." You know, you reach out to shake a guys hand and suddenly get pulled in for the quick embrace with a pat on the back.

Is this some new phenomena?

Huh? This has been done since before the internets.

though i will admit it is more widespread now. when i was in high school only the jocks did it to each other. now seems everyone does.

whats wrong with giving another guy a hug?

these days it's more of a close bond signature than simply being friends.

I've only "bro hugged" with my small circle of best friends, including an Army buddy, and my bro-in-law.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's just a little startling when all you were expecting was a friendly handshake, and instead get pulled in for the embrace.

It's like ordering a Dr. Pepper only to find they put in Coke instead. It ain't bad, but it's not exactly what I asked for 🙂

worse is the surprise ass grab when thinking you're only going for a handshake.
That's like ordering a Coke and getting a Pepsi. Do not want!

I never did it until I started training to fight. Everyone there did it and now so do I. It seems acceptable to me to hug a man I'm going to later punch in the face.

I think doing such a thing with another man is a sign of respect. In other countries it's holding hands, or a peck on the cheek... we're quite homophobic here in the US, so our version is the bro-hug, the level beyond a simple handshake.

In fighting, I'd say it's a good thing to show that respect before and after a fight, keep it simply a sport with no ill feelings.

haha yeah.

when i was in hapkido (and wrestling) whenever we would spar we would do the "bro hug" before and after. IF it was a intense session you would get a real hug.

I amazed at what other countries do. I read a book my mick foley (mankind in WWE) and mentioned how they went to another country where hand holding was a sign of friendship. he said he was shocked at first at seeing these huge guys holding hands (then latter going and bashing each other in the head with chairs).

we here in the US don't allow males to show affection to other's besides the GF/wife/mother wich i think is wrong. I have friends that i have had for years. Some (like my little brother from big brother program) i can give a real hug to (though the bastard is like 6'4) and another does the bro hug but one is so anal all he does is shake hands, hell he don't even show his son much affection!

though i have to admit i enjoy showing effection to people i love/like and i will give ANYONE a hug if they want one.
