Honestly to boycott everything on that list I would have to just say screw it and become a vegetarian...something which I don't plan to do.

There are just too many things I like to eat named on that list for me to even consider boycotting it.

I smoke a good cigar sometimes but that is all. When I used to drink at parties sometimes I would smoke Camel Wides.
 


<< I've lost seven friends in the last five years to tobacco-related illnesses. A couple of years ago, a couple of days before Christmas, I sat with one friend of over thiry years as he pulled his last breath, and just last year, and I was joking with another best friend of even longer, the day before he lapsed into a coma and died. These were creative, funny people from own creative environment.

I truly hate the tobacco companies. I think every tobacco exec for the last fifty years should be tried for crimes against humanity for the killer products they continue to market. I watched those lying assholes raise their hands before Congress and swear that tobacco was not addictive or carcinogenic.

A few years ago, California passed an initiatiative that is one of the strongest anti-smoking laws in the country. Despite the tobacco lobby spending a record amount for a private interest to defeat this initiative, it passed by a record margin of 80% - 20% margin. In the very next session of the state legislature, our electec representatives in the State Assembly passed a bill to overturn that initiative. Fortunately, the media stink that followed caused the State Senate to think better of the idea and kill it. I still have to wonder how much money it takes to get over half of a state legilative body to overturn a law passed by 80% of the voters.

If you don't smoke, your buying decisions about tobacco are irrelevant to them. However, you, and those with whom you share the info, below, can have an effect by boycotting tobacco-owned food products, depriving them of income from those sources. Here's a list from Philip Morris' site:

Giving up the food brands on that list can be easy. I don't know where you live, but there is a California food chain called Trader Joe's that is expanding nationwide. They have great food products at great prices, including cheeses, nuts, wines and far more. Any store that sells Jarlsberg cheese @ around $4.00, instead of $6.00 in the supermarkets, is your friend. The link will show you what they have and their locations. If you're lucky, there's one near you. 🙂

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and refrain from calling you dumb. Instead, I would hope that you are just ignorant of the fact that I am sixty years old. When many of my friends and I were teens, tobacco ads were on radio and TV, cigarettes were glamorized in the movies, and there were no warnings on the packages. I still remember ads making stupid assertions such as the idea that doctors prefered one brand of cig over another. I was lucky that my folks didn't smoke, and they made the point quite well to me and my sisters, but at that age, social pressures have much more to do with your so-called "choice" than does informed thought.

Of course, now, we have the proof that the asshole tobacco execs knew, then, that their products killed people. All they did was lie about it, cover it up, and pay off legislators to keep it legal. :| :| :|

Harvey first off, I sympathise with you about your friends. I must say however that I am a smoker. I know it must not be good for me regardless of what medical science tells us. I know that I cough up some nasty sh!t somtimes. I stay sick longer and it does cut my breath short sometimes. These are things a normal person even 50 years ago wouldn't have ignored.

I don't know why you would refrain from calling me names now since you hace done it before. Nothing you have said changes the fact that your friends made the choice to smoke. The tobacco companies did not force them to do it. It was a choice made of their own free will just like my choice not to smoke cigarrettes on a regular basis. Your age has nothing to do with the choices made by your friends. They can live with their choice why can't you?

Also I would like to know of anymore tobacco owned products so I can help support them for when greedy bastards with no sense of personal responsibilty try to sue them again.

I hope you're not trying to confirm that stupidity angle. Your comments suggest that you are either completely ignorant of the nature of chemical addiction, or you are stupid enough to think it's easy to quit, even if you became addicted for decades as an uninformed teen. As a former professional musician, I've seen plenty of grief and death from addictions. Tobacco is at least as addictive as crack and heroin, and just as deadly, if not more so. The main difference is, it's legal because big tobacco money has corrupted our lawmakers for decades. :|

Because my friends were addicted at a very young age, they didn't live with their choices, they DIED because of them. 🙁
 
Harvey i was going to stay out of this until you mentioned that cigs are just as if not MORE deadly than crack or heroin. Having one cig cannot kill a person. using heroin or crack just once CAN kill a person and has. as far as addiction....i would say that crack and heroin are more addictive than cigs, you just do it less often than cigs.
 
a good number of my friends smoke but i dont.
i considered smoking benson and hedges for a short while though because they sponser some AMAZING club events and i want to support that. so i just got one of my friends to switch their brand so it was like i was smoking b&h 😀

Blaming the tobacco companies for the irresponsible actions of your friends may make you feel better, but it won't help anyone.

Tobacco is legal, someone is going to sell it. Make tobacco illegal and somone will still sell it, only they'll be gangs performing drive bys on each other and killing people who don't make the choice to smoke.

To anyone here blaming tobacco companies and entertaining the idea that tobacco should be illegal:

Envision the multitude of problems caused by the War on Drugs AND Prohibition, multiply it times ten and you'll have your tobacco ban.

Smoking is a choice. To claim anything else is simply denial.

Blaming tobacco companies for your friends death is the same as the mother blaming the video game industry for her son's video game addiction. It's simply allowing you to shift blame from your friends (you can't bring yourself to do this) to the "big bad tobacco companies."

If you don't mind my asking, how old are you? I've been smoking for 27 years and have none of those problems. My Doctor thinks I'm some kind of freak. If I actually experienced any ill effects, I might consider quitting.

pyonir -- As I understand it, clean heroin quite addictive, but it is not inherantly dangerous, except in the case of an overdose. Many junkies who can afford their habit function quite well for years, and I don't believe it is carcinogenic. Of course, the problem is, the strength and purity of illicit heroin are always in doubt, so there are always these added dangers, as well as other dangers from injecting anything.

Crack is another nightmare. A couple of friends did get into it. From their experiences, I would say it is very quickly addictive, and getting free from it is a major pain. Crack can also cause severe physical brain damage, as well as psychological damage.

I don't know many people who have not seen the effects of tobacco addiction. Most tobacco junkies I know have various strong symptoms when they're jonesing, such as extreme irritablility, nervousness, and even a strong case of the shakes. Just watch the addicts rushing outside after leaving a movie theater. Then, there is there is this matter of the well documented long list of known diseases that are directly and strongly linked to tobacco, including various cancers, emphysema, heart attacks, strokes, and more. The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution defines one of the duties of our government is to "promote the general welfare." What sane government with such a duty would continue to sell out to monied interests and allow such products to continue to be produced, let alone sold?

I fully understand that it is impractical to outlaw tobacco sales, immediately. I just don't see enough being done to educate kids or promote and assist quitting among those already addicted.

As healthy as you may be, right now, it still doesn't change the fact that, by continuing to smoke, you're bucking the odds and risking your future health. All of your wishful thinking and bravado won't help once a tobacco-related illness shows up in some future round of tests. :Q I consider you a freind. I've seen it before, and I don't wish on you all the pain and suffering I've already witnessed in other friends.

Just as it was with alcohol, and is with drugs, making tobacco illegal will be worse for the general population than keeping it legal. As it stands now, smokers are just killing themselves. make it illegal and you'll have gang warfare that makes the War on Drugs and Prohibition look like a Boy Scout Jamberee.

There's a difference between "promoting the general welfare" and forcing people to take care of themselves through nanny state restrictions on what they can, and cannot do with their bodies.

Finally, the government has no right whatsoever to forcibly save people from themselves. And trust me, you don't want to give them this right... even if they have already started acting as if this is one of their responsibilities.
