Not always. Simple case in point what if you were born in Somalia? I bet you'd be poor as fvck and so would I. And since the US is not a perfect nation/economy in which your dreams can all be realized with just a little elbow grease, it's somewhere in between that ideal and Somalia, the end result being that luck/birthdright still plays a huge role in how you end up.

The jokers decrying the bailouts and stimulus continue to look foolish with each passing week.

Anyway, Craig is right the rich and poor divide continues to get huge and the middle and lower classes in the US are about flat while the increasing size of the US pie trends very heavily toward those at the top.

That's because the right likes to pawn off Middle class jobs overseas for the sake of profits.

I forget, what adminstration formally signed NAFTA into law?

Done in a Republican majority Congress by a president who I mistook for a Republican.

Right on. Business owners on the left would never outsource. Everybody knows this.

I'd love to see the breakdown of (R)'s and (D)'s among business owners heading up companies large enough to outsource.

If we could save ten jobs, but it cost $10 million, would that be a successful stimulus?

Bang for our buck is going to be what determines whether the stimulus was successful or not.

And California's a unique situation, as their finances have really been in Dutch since the economic downturn. They needed the money and were probably able to save quite a few jobs with it, but other states that were not at risk of having to lay off so many public workers probably didn't benefit nearly as much as California did from the stimulus money.

Billionaires' money is in the companies they own. These happen to be the same companies that employ millions of people and develop and provide all kinds of products and services for everyone. The dollar figure you see under, say, Bill Gates' name means that Microsoft is a huge and thriving company, with Gates having a controlling interest in the company.

Economics is not a zero-sum game. When one person becomes rich, it does not mean he has stolen it from everyone else. Take Microsoft, again, as an example. Most of their income is from software (let's say Windows and Office). You might say they are stealing money from everyone who buys Office and Windows. But before they developed these programs, no one could buy them in the first place. And, now, no one can force you to buy them. So, Microsoft has created wealth because they created a useful product (since it can be used for so many purposes and speed up and enhance all other kinds of business, research, and production).

This of course does not apply to everyone; Madoff, for example, simply ripped people off (which was illegal by the way).

Let's put this another way. If you took every single rich person and taxed 90% of their net worth to give away to the poorest portion of the country, the net effect would be that Microsoft et. al would be owned by millions of people and it would falter and fail quickly. Thousands (millions?) in the computer industry would be adversely affected.

Put all the trust you want in the poor, but there is a good reason they are poor: they make very bad decisions with their money and do not develop useful skills for the modern world.

Shhhh you are ruining their circle jerk over the evil rich with a well thought out logical response.

I wouldn't call it a circle jerk by any means considering that the gap between the rich and the poor has never been larger. I suggest you read up on Reagonomics and educate yourself. Reagonomics was an all out assault on the Middle class. What really cracks me up are people who are in the Middle Class that actually supports the party which threw them under the bus 20+ years ago. My brother falls into this category but he is a hollyroller unfortunately.

First I would like some proof the gap between rich and poor has never been bigger.

Secondly please let me know exactly the difference between what Obama did\is doing with the stimulus and what reaganomics did differently.

Google is your friend, I just had 600 hits but I'm don't have time to list them all ;)

To answer the second question, Obama is letting the Bush tax cuts run out which is a good thing but for changing how the middle class is fucked by the economic system in this country he has not done anything...Yet.

I'd venture to say what he is doing looks an awful like reagonomics right now. Huge deficit spending and tax cuts.

That just about sums up everything right there.

Awful hard on a president who has been in office only 9 months with more problems on his plate then just about any other president in history. I get your angst toward him because you suck on the right wing tit and hump your Reagan blowup doll. ;)

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 12 days. SURELY he can get something accomplished in 9 months? How long is this 'But its only been' argument going to last? 2 years? 4? 8? (If he makes it that far).

Fixed.

Well, if we really want to get picky, your punctuation could stand a little improvement, too:

The correct word is "you're," not "your."

Is that your version of "fuzzy math"?

The Department of Labor reported that the U.S. economy lost 263,000 additional jobs in September, raising the unemployment rate to 9.8 percent?the highest it?s been since entering the recession.

Where would unemployment be in the absence of an economic stimulus? At 9.8%? Lower than 9.8%?

Stimulus = $700,000,000,000

With that much money would could have hired 7 million people and paid them $100,000 each to do nothing.

Instead we cut half of that and threw it away in tax breaks to appease the GOP.

The other half is paying people to do things, instead of nothing.

Also, there are a few more than 7m people out of work.
