Finally it's a little nicer out, so I've decided to fix the damn clicky CV joint... all it took was $35 off of ebay...weee!

We have an '04 Passat. My fiancee had the dealer change the CV joint since the boot had ripped and debris got into it. Came out to like $400, even with inflated dealer labor. Really not awful, considering the job.

I remember the part was a lot cheaper than I expected it to be, too.

Yeah I learn that lesson with my A4 - I was lazy about getting the torn boots fixed until the cv joint exploded and I had to had the car towed home.

I have to replace my boot. One of them snagged when I replaced my transmission and I didn't catch it until the clickclickclickclickclick that I get out of it now, lol.

It's not too bad on my car. Remove tire, an axle nut, a ball joint...tie rod...strut mount bolts.

haha.

A CV joint job for most cars should be half that price. So not sure why you think that was "not awful". Ot maybe not awful for a VW/Audi owner.

Yeah,
I'm actually in the same boat. I replaced the boots last year, but it looks like the driver's side CV joint was already worn... I get clicketyclick whenever I turn accelerate into a semi-hard turn.

On the A6 it's actually pretty easy too - take off the wheel, undo the axle nut remove the pinch bolt for control arms and take the cv joint out of the hub. The biggest bitch is getting those metal bands to click around the boot.

It's true, I owned a BMW 325i and it cost me only $900 in parts to replace the struts and rear shocks with Boge OEM quality stuff.

BTW-I had a '94 Mustang GT that cost me about the same to put in adjustable Koni yellows at all 4 corners.

If you are already hearing the click, click, of a bad or worn cv joint, a boot itself will be of little help. Better to replace the cvv joint / halfshaft than get stuck on the road a few weeks or months later.

My friend and I actually just changed one of his halfshafts on his a6 2.7t. He also got it off ebay for around the same price.

This. BTW, it cost me a about 300 for my civic (to replace the shaft) so 400 for a VW isn't too bad.
