I had one of these

People thought I was a spy when I used the little black box on the mouthpiece of public phones to activate the machine's retrieval mode!

When DTMF menus started I carried around a little "touch tone" box that would play DTMF tones over the mouthpiece. Most phone booth phones were rotary then. I lost it and used my olympus pearlcorder to playback tones I recorded from a touch tone phone too! :Q

Funny how things change.

I'll never have an iphone though. If they make 'em waterproof I may be interested. 3G with a microdrive and it's a deal. ;)

I never used one but I remember when Radio Shack had those "touch tone" boxes in their catalog (which I have missed ever since they quit printing them).

Ha.. I do remember those. Wow! Thanks for making me feel old.

BTW: Know how to set the number of rings for AT&T's built-in *98 voice mail? I wish I could just use a "black box" to set that up! :p

i never had one when that tech was current
i didn't get an answering machine until the first digital models
er, actually i think i had one tape model, but it was really cheap and broke after a few months. so then i waited until the digital ones weren't too expensive
