Dsic golf > Actual golf

Real golf is just too damn hard. If Tiger Woods sucks at golf, what chance do I have?

frankly i think real golf is easier, as far as driving is concerned. approach is arguable- simple on open disc courses, complicated on wooded courses.

real golf is all about short game because any jackass can hit a ball far and straight with enough practice and a good driver. there is a shit lot more complexity to disc driving because the flight characteristics of a golf ball don't exactly change much.

there are holes at seven oaks that might, say, require a dead straight shot, followed by a break to the left and a fade to the right (or you'll leave the fairway and hit trees). or it could be the exact opposite. or go left or right directly off the pad, then reverse directions.

to be able to drive and make far approaches on a non-open course, you gotta have a LOT of tricks up your sleeve. and a few different discs (though my best discs, like that sword, can be made to do about any damn thing i want. hence the 'magic' apect.)

edit- haven't seen that episode in a long time. i actually think that's an ultimate disc (much more 'frisbee' like (which is a trademark, hence why no one uses it any more. maybe they did say 'frolf' in 1993)).

I have two good friends who play a lot, one of them plays in the national championships every year. It is a fun sport, low-key and in my experience the players are very sociable.

This hole is 525 feet but you can easily throw it a hundred + feet past it.

access is a small residential road, found easiest by turning onto mcgavock (the road by the old asylum (seasonal haunted house now)).

in the process of designing a map for our local course, since the signage is pretty bad. the hole signs were recently improved, i figured i'd get a decent sized laminated copy of this for the bulletin board on hole 1...my contribution to the community.

nothing is 'perfect' yet, colors will change, locations will be tweaked, ect. comments welcome.

if anyone is wondering, i made a ~5MP satelite images by stitching a few large screencaps of google maps together

edit- i wanna add some nice curved arrows that indicate the general direction of play for each hole, but that will need to be more 'artistic.' and harder. so i'm doing it last. i took ~100 pics yesterday to try and give references for wooded hole locations.

carl is a 6ft wide tree. named carl. there is a tin-yang made of stones near one basket, and also, there be dragons. right lower will be legend.

eventually all holes will have arrows and market pin locations (dots).

thinking about making, like, laminated 8x11's and selling them for five bucks when i'm done. this one is gonna be at least 17x11, optimally larger if it's not too costly to laminate.

bump for this crazy map i spent a bit on, gradually working everything into the right place is kind of becoming an obsession.

if you were new to this course, would this make any sense? the red is the important stuff, green are alternate holes, circles are possible basket locations.

There just seems to be too much going on in the map. Are there multiple possible baskets per hole in some cases? It'd make more sense to link the tees and the baskets together in some fashion.

i dunno, i'm a little austistic. i mean artistic. i like the crazy black, because i'm going to eventually have ALL the possible pins mapped (2-3 per hole) and the arrows are meant to kind of describe your throw (i.e. the big fat ones mean throw the shit out of it, some holes need s turns, ect). really the black can all be ignored for novices- the tee locations are the important part, and all that's typically shown on a park map. at each specific hole there is a sign that indicates the fairway, pins, and which location the pin is at...but sometimes people can't even find the signs.

bump for final version of map, above file updated. pretty happy with this. very accuate and imo it ended up look pretty great with just a few tweaks to the colors and labels.

oh, i know most would argue. it's not that either is easy, but that they're both pretty damn difficult to do well. i can chuck a disc about 350ft and sink putts within about 25ft. and i suck. just to par this course takes incredible luck. but the guys who shoot in the negatives are not exactly casual players in either sport.

disc is just a casual sport for another generation. it's really progressed in the past ten years or so.
