who plays disc golf? (edit: evaluate my cartography (updated))

i've been playing for probably 5-6 years off and on. there are about ten courses in middle TN.

for the uninitiated, disc golf is more than likely the fastest growing 'sport' (i'll put it in quotes for those that don't like to use 'sport' to describe anything where running is not a necessity) in the country. started in CA, afaik, but is hugely popular in the southeast US.

the progress of my skills has been stalled for years and hampered by intermittent play. recently, i've really been getting back into it and i've had to pretty much completely re-outfit myself.

the most recent epiphany is westside and latitude 64 discs. i swear the swedes and/or fins make these things out of pure magic.

as it turns out, innova sucks my balls. they do not know how to make discs for the high power sidearm thrower, apparently, despite their freaking ENORMOUS line.

i swapped out almost every innova driver in my bag for a king, sword, and boatman from westside. all i kept was a valkyrie and a firebird, plus my putter of choice, an r-pro pig.

one of the finest woods courses in existence, imo. community maintained, not state or county. most of the other courses have too many open rolling hills, which is dumb in a disc sport.

I live exactly one mile from a very nice course (so I am told). I gave it a good run last year, played every week for a few months, by myself and with some guys who knew what they were doing. I just couldnt get into it.

yes, i know, most people, especially golfers (of the other variety), will giggle at 'PDGA.' i did at first, too. but there are legit guys playing this game for a living. they don't win millions, but they're comfortable, and yup, we even have endorsements on a lot of products.

almost got my first ace today with this guy. epic disc. also these guys make plastic that is both crazy looking and invincible. discs did not used to survive direct tree slams with zero damage.

I enjoy it, but don't live near any courses (afaik). I played at one course near Augusta recently, and played last year at a course near San Antonio by my sister's place... first time was at a university course that surrounded Ohio State's main commuter parking area.

Fun game, though I definitely need a lot of work on my technique.

there's parks centered around me. plus, uh, everything else. there are a LOT.

the south will not rise again but fuck me if we don't like to play a little disc golf.

also another awesome disc from the swedes. pain. in addition to being an awesome midrange, this color/plastic constantly looks like it's dripping wet with metallic gold paint (not a finish, it's in the plastic, which is totally smooth).

I don't see any reason in playing the game competitively. Same reason why I think golf is dumb, it's not competitive, it's an excuse to hang out and get drunk.

meh, i dunno. both can be pretty damned competitive. and although 'disc culture' sure has a lot of stoners and drunks, you're not going to do at all well with anything other than a mild buzz.

like normal golf, a lot of people just compete with themselves. as a group, we may do 'tournament scoring' (point per hole won), but generally we just count strokes and try to improve. i'm just getting to the point where i want to compete. local doubles tournaments and stuff are fun, and i wouldn't mind trying a pro-am.

while some parks may have a lot of people just casually throwing discs torwards the basket, it's rare to see someone on my local course than can't drive at least 150ft. i do maybe 275ft with a wind-fighting disc, over 300 if the skies are favorable and i can get a little glide.

See I find Ultimate to be competitive, but disc golf is just kinda meh to me. I've played it several times and while its fun to try to do well, it was no more than an outdoors drinking game in the end.

I really got into Disc Golf about a month 1/2 ago and have been playing a lot since. Unfortunately there's only 2 decent courses here in Tucson and one of those is barely decent. It's fun and it's FREE to play. The problem with it being free to play is that there is no incentive for anyone to take care of any of the courses.

Never seen those discs you linked to before, I gotta get me a bolt disc. My driver almost always goes wayyyy left. I end up driving most holes with my putter because it's actually straight.

PS Anyone know of like a Frisbee throwing device? Something like those devices you hold on to that throw tennis balls for dogs comes to mind

My idiot neighbor plays it ... in our neighborhood. His wife bought him one of those portable units that he stores in his garage. Once or twice a week he pulls that sucker out into his yard and proceeds to throw his Frisbees for hours from his yard, the street, the neighbor's yard ... wherever he feels like standing. The sounds of the chains (on the unit) that the disks hit when he actually hits it makes the whole neighborhood sound like a prison.

I'm all for the sport ... but in front of my house?

one of those canvas things with light gauge chain? yeah those are crap and probably are pretty annoying. tell him to go to the park, many have practice baskets.

we have a semi-permanent goal in a friend's yard; it's a normal goal like you'd see in a park, cemented into a buried 5 gallon bucket. the much heavier welded chains are actually not very loud when used with a proper putter. donking it into the rim is probably louder. also it's ~150ft from his back door.

I play in Minnesota, a lot...6 hole in ones this year for me so far...and this is my second year actually playing.

I player destroyer, valkayrie, and a vulcan.

Vulcan is a sick disc, I can get about 500~ foot drives with it.

I have about 30 discs, but I generally play 4 in a round, sometimes carry a new one. I flick mainly, been trying out back hand, I am slowly getting some quality shots with it though.

I have a basket in my backyard and play a fair amount at the local course called DeLaveaga. It's actually probably the most famous disc golf course as it is where the disc golf "Masters" is held.

I play, or at least attempt to play, but am not really that great at it. Then again I only play a few times a year.

BTW, I'm also in middle TN and play in Murfreesboro pretty much exclusively (have played a course in Asheville before). May need to check out the course you posted some time.
