I'm looking for a shop that performs custom laptop work, such as video memory upgrades that will require soldering. I'm also trying to locate a site that sells mobile PIII chips. Anybody out there have some insight.

For the most part, upgrading laptops is an exercise in futility. Peddle your old one for what you can get for it and buy a new one that will do what you want. You will be way ahead of the game. A few machines allow processor upgrades by replacing a module and practically all have provisions for system memory upgrades, sometimes for astronomical prices. Beyond that you are well past the point of diminishing returns. Buying stuff marked laptop is akin to buying stuff marked aircraft. The price is so far out of reason that you question the sellers sanity let alone your own. Just the other day I had to shell out $90 for the cable that connects my floppy drive to the serial port.

you cant upgrade memory . most laptops have memory on the die of the chip or in the same package, such as ati mobility, radeon mobility, neo magic etc. savage ix / mx can probably upgrade memory but there is no point. maybe the geforce2gos also, but still no real reason. there are some site on pricewatch that sell mobile chips. or you can try ebay. or you can buy from me, since i've got a p3800 mpga2 sitting in a drawer that i need to sell. $130 shipped takes it

The problem is that I have a newer machine that fits like a dream. I would like to upgrade the ATi 128 8MB to a ATi 128 16MB chip...and If I could upgrade my 850 to a Gigger, all the better. I would think there would be a nice market for upgrading mobile video chips...most of it would be labor...maybe I'm wrong.
