Who owns Id Software?

I was looking for Id in the stock market, but it doesn't seem they have a stock symbol. Does anybody own them? I figure the company that owns Id should have a stock symbol.

id is a private company, thus there's no stock symbol.

You can't they're privately held. I.E you need to work for the company and be offered stock options to own stock.

I'm wondering if I should invest.

even if you were to invest, why would you invest? you cant say "Because Doom 3 is coming out" in the stockmarket it would have been out already for quite some time. that doesnt work. The stock market really is unpredictable. however when earnings are announced, you can normally predict what the stock will do compared to the predictions.

Well you COULD invest in ID, but the board of directors would have to approve, so you'd have to give the Carmack's a call🙂

and ask for a ride in his twin turbo Ferrari F50 while your at it.

Most of the big wigs at ID have more money than God, so I doubt that they would go public. They probably wouldn't want to lose full control of their company just to make a few more bucks off of the stock options.

Is this just the way they were? Or did they make it off their previous ventures?

I always thought Activision owned them, but maybe Activision is just a publisher that they go through.

id got their foot in the door with Wolfenstein 3d. They kicked the door down with Doom. And brought the whole building down with the Quake engines.
Activision just published some of their games, namely Quake2 and Quake3

You guys must be joking if you don't think that you can invest in private companies. Sure, you can't buy stock on the market, per se. But every company needs investors, private or not.

NOOOO!!!!

It's amazing how small and focused id is; 23 team members do everything for the whole company, and only 3 guys don't directly work on the games, the CEO, the Business Director, and the secretary/mom

so true. Comparing to bungie they're really tiny, and considering that this company basically brought us FPS. Wolf3D was my first real game addiction.

My father owns/has been running a private trading company for 20 years and he never needed any single investment. Because the company makes enough money to support itself as well as the investment money.

Most people have said you CAN invest, but that you'd have to go through Carmack to get there.
