I always wondered that after the dining room scene in Total Recall.

A company building a supersonic jet says it plans to replace cabin windows with thin display screens embedded in the wall.

Cameras recording outside the aircraft will display pictures on the screens.

It'd be pretty awesome if they outfitted them with touchscreens that allowed you to change the views and then outfitted the plane with numerous cameras at different angles.

So...yeah!

Brilliant idea. Display technology is good enough and cheap enough that this is feasible now, and it simplifies the engineering of the fuselage itself.

Indeed. Windows have always been a weak point on pressurized aircraft. That's the reason why they're so small to begin with.

Hmmm, not sure I'd like that. Like on the 3D rides at theme parks if the visual doesn't match 100% with the movement then it makes me nauseous. But I guess since the airplane mostly goes straight it wouldn't be bad, but during banks/takeoffs/landings I could see it making some people sick if it's not 100% accurate.

Why would a live camera connection not be 100% accurate? We're not talking about simulating a flight over Narnia here.

...although I suppose that we COULD.

Here come the nose to tail bouncing display ads!

Happily watching the fake window when you spy an approaching aircraft. As it gets closer you realize it isn't an aircraft at all but a giant tube of Preparation H flying at you at the speed of advertizing.

Planes are designed totally ass-backward anyway. The luggage should be on top and the people on the bottom with huge downward curved windows so you can watch the scenery go by. Landing would be awesome.

There's something on the wing!

Hah...and...how long until someone hacks the system to stream an engine on fire or a gremlin ripping the wing apart. I think it'd be a hilarious (yet if you didn't know) prank.

Or a static image of the runway....

Wow good idea. Less leg room for some tho. I love sitting slightly behind the wing so I can watch the ailerons flaps and air brakes work.

This reminds me of Daybreakers where they had to replace car windows with LCD screens so vampires could drive in the daytime.

They will use 720P panels and the screen door effect will be awful. After a year or two, there will be burn in issues, and some will have static. The panels will not be seamless, and, they will differ unit by unit. I'll take an actual Window please.
